Nokomis Hitting Stride At Right Time

Posted

The Nokomis Lady Redskins picked up three wins last week to edge closer to the .500 mark on the season and carry some momentum into regionals.

Nokomis started off the week with senior night as the Metro-East Lutheran Knights came to town on Monday, May 24. The game proved to be a memorable one for seniors, Kristen Stauder and Rebecca Wattjes, and the Redskins as they rallied for a 10-9 victory.

The game would be back-and-forth throughout, with both teams scoring one run in the first, followed by the Knights plating three runs in the second to regain the advantage.

The momentum would swing back toward Nokomis in the third and fourth as they scored three runs in both innings to take a 7-4 lead. That momentum wouldn’t last long though, as Metro-East Lutheran jumped back on top with a five-run fifth, making the score 9-7 in the Knights’ favor.

The see-saw continued in the bottom half of the inning as Nokomis put together a rally that would put them ahead for good.

Hailey Engelman reached on an error and went from second to third on a stolen base. After Addison Dangbar walked, Aubrey Jaros cut the Knights’ lead to one with a single, then an error allowed Dangbar to score and Jaros to move to second on the play.

A ground out and a walk put Jaros on third and Emma Hill on first when Kristen Stauder plated the go-ahead run with a ground out to third that allowed Jaros to score.

From there, Reaghan Jonas took over. The Redskin hurler allowed a leadoff walk in the sixth, but set the next three batters down in order. The Knights would get the leadoff batter on in the seventh as well on a dropped third strike, but Jonas bore down again and got the next three outs to secure the win.

Jonas, who came on for starter Aubrey Jaros with two outs in the fifth, pitched two and a third innings without allowing a hit, striking out four and walking one. Jaros gave up nine runs, six earned, on nine hits, five walks and one hit batsman, but also struck out eight batters in the game.

Stauder would have a big game in the day honoring her and her classmate, Wattjes. The senior shortstop went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a team-best three RBIs.

In addition to Stauder’s contributions, Nokomis also had four players with two hits in the game as they outhit the Knights 11-9. Karli Wanger and Reaghan Jonas were both 2-for-3, while Aubrey Jaros and Hailey Engelman were 2-for-4 and 2-for-5.

East Alton-Wood River

On May 25, Reaghan Jonas picked up where she left off the day before and was lights out in a 15-0 four-inning win against East Alton-Wood River.

Jonas struck out seven, walked two and allowed just one hit, a single by Madi Fry with two outs in the first inning. The Redskins starter then sat down five straight batters, before walking back-to-back batters in the third and finishing off the game with four straight outs.

On offense, Nokomis scored seven runs in both the second and third innings as they entered the bottom of the fourth needing just one run to end the game by the 15-run rule.

That run would come quickly after the Oilers recorded the first out as Emma Sneddon walked, Addison Dangbar singled and Aubrey Jaros was hit by a pitch. Before Karli Wanger had a chance to pick up an RBI with the bases loaded, Sneddon scored on a wild pitch to give Nokomis its eighth win of the season.

Jonas didn’t just get it done on the mound, but she excelled at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs. Dangbar added in three hits and two runs scored, while Jaros also went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

Sneddon, Wanger, Baylee Cesaretti and Kristin Stauder all had one hit each, but also combined to score 11 runs between them (two each, except Snedddon, who scored three).

Bunker Hill

The icing on the cake came on Wednesday, May 26, when the Lady Redskins picked up another four-inning blowout win, this time over Bunker Hill.

From the opening inning the Nokomis bats were alive, with three runs coming on four hits in the bottom half of the frame, erasing a three-run inning by the Minutemaids in the top of the first. The Redskins added two more runs in each of the next two innings on three hits and a pair of walks as the scoreboard now read 7-3 in Nokomis’ favor.

After a quick three-batter top of the fourth, which included catcher Emma Hill gunning down a would-be base stealer, Nokomis unloaded. The Redskins put the first three batters on base with a single by Addison Dangbar, a walk to Aubrey Jaros and a single by Karli Wanger, which drove in Dangbar and Jonas to make it 9-3.

Two pitches later, two more runs went up on the board as Reaghan Jonas homered to center field to make it 11-3.

With the bases empty, Bunker Hill got the first out of the inning, but Kristen Stauder singled after the ground out. That trend continued with a strikeout by the Minutemaids for out number two, followed by a single by Hailey Engelman that drove Stauder to third.

Any hopes by Bunker Hill of getting out of the inning without further damage were dashed in the next at-bat, when the ninth batter of the inning, Emma Sneddon, singled to give Nokomis a 10-run lead.

Doubles by Dangbar and Jaros scored two more runs, with a walk to Wanger and another double by Jaros platting one more.

By the time the smoke cleared, Nokomis had sent 14 batters to the plate, with 11 scoring to make it 18-3 and end the game early.

The Redskins outhit the Minutemaids 17-2 in the game, with Addison Dangbar going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs. Reghan Jonas would go 3-for-4 as well, with Emma Sneddon, Aubrey Jaros and Kristen Stauder adding two hits apiece. Eight different Redskins would score runs in the game, with eight more driving in runs as well.

Aubrey Jaros would start the game on the mound, but run into some control issues and walk four and give up three runs in a third of an inning. Reaghan Jonas would take over on the mound and allow just two hits, two walks and strike out seven in three and two-thirds of an inning.

Nokomis’ final regular season game was scheduled for May 27, but was cancelled due to rain. The Redskins will start regional play on Thursday, June 3, as they play at Windsor at 4:30 p.m. for the chance to advance to the regional championship game on Friday, June 4.

Lady Redskins Knock Off McGivney

The Nokomis High School softball team picked up their fifth victory of the season on Thursday, May 20, with a 24-6 victory over Father McGivney in Glen Carbon.

The Redskins pounded out 31 hits in four innings as they scored 10 in the first, nine in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth to finish off the rout, with all of the Griffins’ runs coming in the first two innings.

Aubrey Jaros picked up the win on the mound, scattering seven hits and four walks while striking out nine.

At the plate, Reghan Jonas was one of nine Redskins to have multiple hits as she went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs driven in. Nora Patton also had four hits, two runs scored and one RBI.

Addison Dangbar, Emma Hill, Emma Sneddon, Aubrey Jaros and Kristen Stauder all had three hits each, while Emily Cress and Presley Mehochko had two hits apiece. All 13 Nokomis players who had an at-bat in the game had at least one hit.

Beardstown

After back-to-back wins over McGivney and Hillsboro on May 20 and 21, Nokomis ended the week with a pair of games against Beardstown on May 22, on the Tigers’ home field. The home team would earn the sweep of the doubleheader, beating Nokomis 9-1 in game one and 6-2 in game two.

In game one, Nokomis was held to just two hits by starter Rachel Hager, one of which led to the Redskins’ only run. In the top of the second, Reghan Jonas singled, took second on an error by the Beardstwon shortstop and moved to third when Baylee Cesaretti reached on a dropped third strike.

The Tigers would get the next batter to strike out, but Presley Mehochko sent a ground ball to short that allowed Jonas to score in the next at-bat.

That made the score 1-1 at the time, but Beardstown added two runs in the fourth and sixth and four runs in the fifth to finish off the eight-run win. Hailey Engelman would have the only other hit for Nokomis, a single in the fourth inning.

Of the nine runs given up by Nokomis starter Aubrey Jaros, only three were earned as the Redskin pitcher scattered seven hits, three walks and three hit batsmen, while striking out four. Addison Dangbar came on in relief to get the final out and struck out the only batter she faced on three pitches.

As good as Hager was in the first game, Marlee Brown was nearly as good for the Tigers in game two, both on the mound and at the plate. Brown went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBIs, a double and a home run as the Tigers came away with the 6-2 victory.

The homer came in the first inning, a three-run shot that gave Beardstown an early 3-0 advantage. They would tack on single runs in the third, fifth and sixth as well, with Nokomis’ runs coming in the fourth and sixth.

The Redskins’ first run came after Reghan Jonas doubled and was courtesy ran for by Megan Kuhn. After walks to Baylee Cesaretti and Presley Mehochko loaded the bases, Emily Cress was hit by a pitch to push Kuhn across the plate.

Cress got another RBI in the sixth as her grounder to short allowed Cesaretti to score after she reached on a fielder’s choice.

Nokomis would get two runners on in the top of the seventh when Addison Dangbar and Aubrey Jaros walked, but Brown settled down after that and struck out the next three batters to end the game.

Reghan Jonas, Baylee Cesaretti and Hailey Engelman all had hits for the Redskins, who were outhit 8-3 in the contest. Jonas was solid on the mound, giving up eight hits, six runs (five earned) and four walks, while striking out three.

The losses dropped Nokomis to 6-10 on the season.
