Beds thundered up and down Main Street in downtown Hillsboro, accompanied by running feet Saturday, Aug. 21, in the Shop Hillsboro Moonlight Madness bed races.
Eight five-member teams participated on beds on loan from Hillsboro Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. The top three teams were awarded cash prizes, thanks to First Community Bank, along with gold bed-themed trophies, each hand-crafted by Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kaitlyn Fath.
Four of the five team members were required to push the bed up the street–remaining in contact across the finish line–while the fifth team member was on the bed. Teams raced one-on-one until one of the beds became disabled; the double-elimination tournament continued thereafter based on times.
In the end, it was the The Journal-News team (Mike Plunkett, Barbara Boston, Cayden Huber, August Plunkett and Shane Huber) who finished first, just .07 second faster than Bananas In Pajamas (Bri Ruppert, Aaron Ruppert, Alex Ruppert, Emily Ruppert and Trevor Hartman), a crowd-favorite team that competed in clever banana costumes.
The Imagine Hillsboro team (Tori O’Dell, Amber Kalaher, Chris Sherer, Lucas Altenberger and Melanie Sherer) finished third, edging out the Try Hards (Alyssa Leisure, Aiden Leisure, Reagan Voyles, Elijah Howard and Mark Mattson).
Also racing hard were the Opera Customer team (Anthony Marcolini, Kerry Furness, Holly Lemons, Lakota Page and Kenny Voyles). Granny and the Duster Dolls (Kylie Kirby, Jody Hartman, Paula Collins, Jenny Johnson and Dana Holshouser) intimidated the field with well-choreographed callisthenics before the races, and the Brew Crew (Bobby Johnson, Amanda Johnson, Tim Ulrici, Jill Ulrici and Carlos Luevano) was the second team from Opera House Brewing Company. The Dragon Fire team (Jessica Furness, Jamie Duff, Jennifer Anderson, Andrea Durbin and David Mattson) represented Hillsboro Junior High School, dressed in Dragon-green with the school’s mascot on the bed.
