Nancy L. Stanton, 85, of Hillsboro, formerly of Coffeen, died peacefully on Sunday morning, April 6, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones at her residence.
A graveside service will be held in her honor on Monday, April 21, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Coffeen. The service will be followed by a meal at the Coffeen Community Center, and everyone is welcome.
Mrs. Stanton was born on May 10, 1939, in Walworth County, WI, and was the cherished daughter of Cloide and Ima (nee Hardiman) Carruthers. She graduated from Vandalia High School in 1957 and later attended Browns Business College. With her educational foundation, Mrs. Stanton built a fulfilling career as a devoted and well-respected tax preparer and bookkeeper, faithfully serving primarily the Bond and Montgomery County families and small businesses. She was a proud member of both the Independent Accountant Association and the National Enrolled Agent Association.
On February 14, 1960—Valentine’s Day—she married the love of her life, Herschel Dale Stanton, in Brownstown. They shared 56 beautiful years together before his passing on Aug. 22, 2016.
Mrs. Stanton’s life was a living testimony to her unwavering faith in Christ Jesus. She never questioned why God allowed things to happen but trusted fully in His divine plan. Her joy in serving Christ was evident in her daily life. She loved to attend church, found strength and peace in the relentless power of prayer, and inspired others through her steady, quiet walk with the Lord.
Her faith was also the foundation of her love as a mother. With every season of letting go, as each of her children stepped out into the world to build their own lives, she found comfort in knowing that God would care for and protect them, just as He always had. Her trust in the Lord’s provision gave her peace as she watched her family grow and flourish.
Mrs. Stanton’s legacy of faith, love, and gentle strength lives on in all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered.
Mrs. Stanton is survived by her loving children, Candace I. (Carroll) Moreland of Ramsey, Penny L. Dixon of Hillsboro, Joy A. (Firas) Al-Nimri of Crown Point, IN, Roy Neal (Dawn) Stanton of Parker, CO, Nathan A. (Karen) Stanton of Auburn, AL, and daughter-in-law, Terri Stanton of Hillsboro; 15 grandchildren; three granchildren; and dear sister, Donna Depew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Herschel; son, Paul Kent Stanton; three grandchildren;and twelve siblings.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Mrs. Stanton’s honor to the Baptist Children’s Home in Carmi, Illinois, and the Baptist Rehoboth Association’s Camp Grounds—both ministries close to her heart. Condolences may be left online at www.basspattondeanfh.com.
