Michael L. Pernicka, Sr., 72, of Staunton, died at 9:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, at Community Hospital of Staunton.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at Tine Sawyer Cemetery near Staunton. Williamson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mr. Pernicka was born on Oct. 19, 1951, in Staunton, the son of the late Frank Pernicka and Dorothy (McGill) Pernicka Sanders. He married Debra Best on Feb. 9, 1973, in Godfrey, and she survives.
He was a pipefitter and supervisor of maintenance at Granite City Steel in Granite City for many years, as well as being an instructor at SWIC. He was a member of the Prairietown Volunteer Fire Department in Prairietown. His passion was working with computers and he was always telling jokes.
In addition to his devoted wife of 51 years, Mr. Pernicka is survived by his sons, Michael Pernicka, Jr. of Staunton, Shawn Pernicka of Sawyerville and Blake Pernicka of Prairietown; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Connie Bergschneider of Farmersville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Gary Bergschneider.
