Meet The 2021-2022 Hillsboro Hiltoppers

Posted

New Hillsboro football coach Joe Reed and his staff (Zach Reed, Bill Reed, Jeremy Connor, Roger Fath, and Corbin Govaia) had their 48 man roster in uniform and ready to roll under muggy skies Friday evening, Aug. 20, at Sawyer Field. The occasion was the Gatorade scrimmage, and it was a chance for parents and fans to see abbreviated we-against-us play.

The roster consists of seniors (listed by number) Dalton Reynolds (#2), Blaine Stewart (#5), Garret Schaacke (#31), Kayden Leibscher (#40), Joe Keiser (#43), Ian Malloy (#54), Drake Mullen (#57), Carsen Maddaleno (#66), Magnus Wells (#70), Maddex Scott (#82), and Bryce Connor (#86).

Suiting up as juniors are Nick Hockett (#4), Zane Duff (#7), Cameron Hacke (#8), Brayden Fowler (#23), Jaben Compton (#24), Ethan Schreiber (#35), Blaze Helton (#44), Kyle Butler (#55), and Reese Morford (#64).

Sophomores, who traditionally suit up for varsity play but see more time in sophomore/freshman games, are Zander Wells (#6), Jace Stewart (#12), Elliot Lentz (#13), Landon Reincke (#20), Ian Anderson (#21), Cam Hendricks (#22), Cole Lenczycki (#50), Jake Huber (#63), Carson Walker (#65), Chase Knetzer (#72), Alec Leetham (#76), Landon Frisbee (#78), and Dylan Lessman (#87).

The freshmen, who if the medical situation permits, will play eight freshman games as well as appearing in freshman/sophomore contests, are Kaeden Smith (#5), Drake McSperritt (#7), Cody Boerckel (#9), Jackson Teutken (#10), Caleb Greenwood (#23), Elias Baney (#24), Nathan Schaake (#32), Bruno Fox (#55), Wesley Myers (#56), Kaden Long (#57), Gideon Fuson (#63), Atticus Bertolino (#64), Jesse Ringhausen (#68), Caleb Page (#70), and Austin Newingham (#85).

The offensive system Coach Reed has installed in the limited time he’s had with his new changes is the one he grew up playing, a double-wing set that relies on deception in the backfield and solid line play. It’s a ball possession style with passing as an option; it could be a good match for the talent the Toppers have at hand.

Tentative rosters for the opening game (7 p.m. next Friday, Aug. 27, in Greenville) will be published in Thursday’s edition of The Journal-News. Hats are off to the nineteen member cheer squad, coached again this year by Kelly Kenny, because they too were at the Gatorade game. They include seniors Olivia Gent, Kennyray Jordan, Meagan Jorn, Melissa Rufus, Mia Sherer, and Aliyah Trader; juniors Dahlia Bertolino, Audrey Hemken, Audrey Holcomb, and Summer Smith; sophomores Hailey Christian, Madie Hollo, Marah Huber, Chloe Irvine, and Ava Pollard; and freshmen Clara Armbruster, Brynn Connor, Zoe Fulhort, and Audrey Schultz.
