Martha Elizabeth “Liz” Cardwell, 79, of Jefferson City, MO, died on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at her home.

A memorial Mass will be held Monday, Feb. 20, beginning at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jefferson City, MO,  with Father Matthew Flatley officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Coffeen. Houser-Millard Funeral Home in Jefferson City, MO, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Cardwell was born Feb. 18, 1943, in Hillsboro, to William and Mary Ellen (Ernst) Arney. She married Cance Clinton Cardwell on Feb. 12, 1982, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 2008.

She attended and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1961. She continued her education at St. Louis University, where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1965. In May 1998, she graduated from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO, with her master’s of education in guidance and counseling.

Mrs. Cardwell retired from the Missouri State Board of Nursing in 2006 after a successful career.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jefferson City, MO. She loved gardening and flowers, was a wiz with crossword puzzles and was a backyard bird watching enthusiast. In her younger years, she enjoyed sewing, particularly quilt tops.

Mrs. Cardwell loved her pets and was active in supporting local animal shelters and humane societies. Most importantly, she loved her kids and grandson and cherished the time she spent with them.

She is survived by her children, Martha Ann Westhoff of Jefferson City, MO, David “Matthew” Westhoff of Fullerton, CA, and Mark Douglas (Val) Westhoff of Racine, WI; and grandson, Liam Westhoff.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cardwell was preceded in death by her parents.
