Litchfield Wrestling Claims Home Wins

Posted

The Litchfield High School wrestling team closed out their regular season at home on Saturday, June 5, picking up two wins in a four-team meet with Taylorville, Metro-East Lutheran and PORTA.

The victories would come against Taylorville and Metro-East Lutheran by the scores of 35-6 and 30-12. All three teams are short on numbers this year, but Litchfield did well in the contested matches in the two duals, going 3-0 against Taylorville and 1-1 against Metro-East Lutheran.

Against the Tornadoes, Alex Powell (106) and Brady Davidson (132) both collected wins by fall, with Powell beating Zach Braun in 28 seconds and Davidson needing just 1:20 to dispatch Gage Rusher. The Panthers’ other win came from Carter Powell (126), who secured a 20-5 first period tech fall against Aiden Seller.

In the match against Metro-East Lutheran, the Panthers would split, with Aaron Roach collecting a pin at 145 pounds against Caiden Downs and Colten Hester falling to Ryton Miller in the 152-pound match.

Despite a final score of 48-22 in favor of the Bluejays, the matches between PORTA and Litchfield were the most intriguing. The two teams would face off six times in contested matches, with Litchfield winning four and PORTA taking two.

The Powell brothers would once again come away with wins, with Alex pinning Zaden Cooper with 17 seconds left in the first period and Carter also winning by fall, with sixth tenths of a second on the first period clock.

Brady Davidson picked up a win by fall as well, needing 36 seconds to pin Jacob Vogel, while senior Aaron Roach earned a major decision victory over Cam McCoy by a 9-1 final score.

The match was the final home meet for Roach, Carter Powell, Caleb Jurgena (who wrestled in two exhibition matches) and Will Carlile. Carlile was held out of the meet to rest up for regionals, having burnt the candle at both ends by competing in both wrestling and pole vault this season. With the rest, the returning state champion is expected to be ready to go when regionals start June 13.

Litchfield’s other points came from Carter Powell, who defeated Curtis Steinkamp 5-2 at 120 pounds, and Will Carlile and Alex Powell, who both won by forfeit.

Carlile, the Powell brothers and Davidson would all collect wins in the Vandalia match as well as the Panthers went 4-3 in contested matches against the state-ranked Vandals.

Carlile defeated Ryan Kaiser 6-1, while Carter Powell also got a decision win, beating Jarek Wehrle 4-1. Alex Powell would get six points with a win by fall over Josie Womack in the final 10 seconds of the first period, while Brady Davidson took a 12-4 major decision win over Owen Miller.
