A seven run fifth inning ended Litchfield’s day early as the Lady Panthers fell to Morrisonville 12-2 on Wednesday, May 26.
Morrisonville took an early lead with an RBI single by Isabella Tryon in the bottom of the first, but Litchfield rallied to take a 2-1 lead after the top of the third. The comeback started with one out as Cara Pence walked, Jenni Boden singled and Bella Roach walked to load the bases. Lauren Monke singled to drive in Pence and tie the game, with Litchfield getting the go-ahead run two batters later when Ashley Hickerson reached on an error and drove in Boden.
While that error hurt the Mohawks, fielding miscues would be even more harmful to the Panthers. Only one of Morrisonville’s next 11 runs would be earned as Litchfield committed eight errors in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Two of those runs came in the third on one hit, three errors and a walk, while two more came in the fourth on two singles, two errors and two walks.
The real blow came in the fifth, though, when Morrisonville ended the game early with seven runs on three errors, four singles, two walks and a hit batsman.
The Mohawks would outhit Litchfield 10-3, with Isabella Tryon (three), Allison Walter (two) and Sarah Williams (two) each posting a multi-hit day for Morrisonville. Bella Roach, Lauren Monke and Jenni Boden would have Litchfield’s three hits.
Whitney Lipe got the win on the mound for Morrisonville with five strikeouts, two walks and three hits allowed. Riley Heyen pitched the first inning for Litchfield, striking out two and walking five, while Emma Walch pitched the next four, striking out three, walking five and hitting one.
Litchfield will start the postseason on the road as they take on Auburn on Wednesday, June 2, at 4:30 p.m. on the Trojans’ home field.
