Depth is definitely one of the Litchfield boys golf team’s strengths this season as Coach Dan Newkirk of putting any of his top eight to 10 players on the course without losing much.
On Monday, the line-up was one of the few times this year that the young Panthers’ top six could be called “senior-laden” as the 12th grade trio of Kelvin Dooley, Allen Schneider and Ryan Baugher all got the start on senior night.
Dooley carded a 6-over-par 41 on the day to take second individually, with teammate Tug Schwab the only one to finish ahead of him. Schwab shot an even-par 35 at his home course of the Litchfield Country Club to take the top spot for the third time this year.
A.J. Odle and Ian Otto would join Litchfield with scoring rounds, each shooting 7-over-par 42s, while Schneider and Baugher were close behind with a pair of 46s. Litchfield was so good on Monday that even if they would have used their bottom four scores instead of their top four, they would have shot a respectable 176.
As it was, the Panthers shot a 160 as a group, good enough to beat Carlinville by 13 strokes. Sam Quarton and Colin Pope led the Cavies with a pair of 42s, while Southwestern also sent three players, led by Dylan Delong with a 55.
The Panthers were supposed to play at Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton on Sept. 14, but Mother Nature had other plans.
Following Wednesday’s match at home against Staunton, Stouthwestern, Vandalia and Gillespie, Litchfield will have more South Central Conference competition to contend with as they take on Greenville, Southwestern and Pana at Indian Springs Golf Course near Fillmore.
