The Litchfield and Hillsboro boys golf teams were both in Wood River on Monday, Aug. 16, as the annual Hickory Stick Invitational teed off at Belk Park Golf Course.

The tournament, hosted by East Alton-Wood River, drew 13 full teams, plus three more schools who sent a handful of golfers to Wood River. Both Litchfield and Hillsboro would finish in the top half of the 16-teams, with the Panthers taking fifth and Hillsboro coming in seventh.

Ian Otto and Tug Schwab led the way for Litchfield, as they just missed finishing in the top 10 individually. Otto carded a 10-over-par 82 on the day to finish a stroke behind Joe Hyten of Father McGivney for 10th, while Schwab was just a stroke behind his teammate.

A.J. Odle and Zach Boston completed the scoring for the Purple Panthers, shooting a 91 and a 92 to give Litchfield a 348 for the tournament. The score would be just six strokes behind Father McGivney for fourth and seven behind Jerseyville for third.

Allen Schneider also played for the Panthers and shot a 103 as Litchfield’s fifth man.

The Hiltoppers would finish seven strokes behind the neighboring Panthers as they shot a 355 on the day. Civic Memorial finished in-between the county rivals, shooting a 350.

Preston Lyerla matched Otto with an 82 to tie for 11th overall. Dom Haggard also shot in the 80s, carding an 85 in his first match of the 2021 season.

The other two Topper scoring rounds came from Dillon Smail and Tycen Thacker, who added a pair of 94s to the cause. Drake Vogel shot a 98 for Hillsboro’s fifth score as the Toppers were one of five teams to put all five players under 100 for the tournament.

While the two county South Central Conference teams put in solid efforts, another SCC foe was on another level. Vandalia shot a 299 for the tournament to beat second place Mascoutah by 21 strokes.

Conner McCall and Chase Laack both shot under-par, with McCall earning medalist honors over his teammate with a 68 to Laack’s 69. All five Vandalia players shot under 90 for the tournament, the only team to accomplish that feat.

Both Litchfield and Hillsboro will be back in action again, as the Toppers play Teutopolis on Thursday, Aug. 19, while Litchfield takes on Staunton, Auburn and Mt. Olive on Friday, Aug. 20, at Timber Lakes.
