Paige Rainwater twirled a seven-inning, 14-strikeout gem on Saturday, May 15, to give the Lincolnwood softball team a 4-1 victory over Hillsboro in Raymond.
Rainwater gave up just four hits, none of which came in the same inning and only one resulted in a Hillsboro run.
As good as Rainwater was, Taelyn Smith was nearly as good for the Hiltoppers as both sophomore hurlers had shutouts through four innings.
After being held to two hits in the first four innings, Lincolnwood was able to strike first, picking up a run in the bottom of the fifth inning after Katelyn Payne walked, took second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Sidney Glick.
Hillsboro would threaten in the top of the sixth after Haley Major walked then tried to score from second on a single by Aubrey Evans, but a throw from center by Glick to Brittany Slightom was in time to catch the Topper senior at the plate.
Slightom turned defense into offense in the bottom of the sixth as she singled to start the inning.
After an error on a ground ball off the bat of Taryn Millburg, Paige Rainwater singled to center, which allowed Slightom to score.
Both Millburg and Kylie Neisler (Rainwater’s courtesy runner) moved up a base on a passed ball, with Millburg scoring shortly after when Marisa Webb reached on an error. Neisler would make it 4-0 on a sacrifice fly by Desi Pitchford as Lincolnwood entered the seventh with a four-run lead.
The Toppers would do their best to erase that margin, with Summer Smith leading off the inning by reaching on an error that allowed her to go all the way to second.
A single by Meagan Jorn would allow Smith to score, but a fielder’s choice and Rainwater’s 14th strikeout of the game ended the rally and gave Lincolnwood their 11th win.
Brittany Slightom and Sidney Glick would each have two hits for the Lancers, who outhit Hillsboro 5-4 in the game. Meagan Jorn had a pair of singles for Hillsboro, while Sophia Blankenship and Aubrey Evans had the other two base knocks.
With the win, Lincolnwood improved to 11-2, while Hillsboro fell to 1-10. The Lancers will host North Mac on Monday, May 17, followed by a road trip to Edinburg on Tuesday, May 18. Hillsboro will also be at home on May 17, against Vandalia.
