Lincolnwood Takes 3rd At Pretzel Classic

Posted

It was another busy, but productive weekend for the Lincolnwood-Morrisonville volleyball team as the Lancers went 4-1 at the Ray Long Pretzel Classic in New Berlin on Sept. 17-18.

The going was anything but easy for the Lancers in pool play as two of their three games went to a third set.

The first of those three-set thrillers came against West Central, which is made up of students from Manito, Forest City, Green Valley, Topeka and Spring Lake. The Lancers picked up a 25-10 win in game one, but the Raiders answered with a 25-17 win in game two. Playing to 15, Lincolnwood managed to pick up a narrow four-point win to hand West Central their second loss in pool play.

Game two for the Lancers would be against Athens, who beat West Central in their first game and Deland-Weldon in their second. The Warriors beat the Lancers 25-21 in game one to keep their title hopes alive, but Lincolnwood rallied with a 25-15 win in game two and a 15-12 victory in the tiebreaker.

With two wins down, only Deland-Weldon stood between the Lancers and a trip to the first place bracket. The game would be the shortest of the three pool play games for Lincolnwood as they made short work of the Eagles 25-15, 25-13.

A familiar foe would be waiting for the Lancers in the gold bracket as the orange and black were welcomed by MSM Conference power Springfield Lutheran. Lincolnwood took the Crusaders down to the wire in game one before falling 25-23, but Lutheran rolled to a 25-8 victory in game two to seal the match.

On the other end of the bracket, Southeastern defeated Cumberland 25-20, 15-25, 15-12 to advance to the championship, where they would defeat Lutheran 25-19, 25-7. In the third place game, Lincolnwood handled a very good Pirate club with a two-game win, 25-19, 25-20.

After the match Hailee Belsher was named to the all-tournament team. The Morrisonville junior had 73 kills in five games in New Berlin, including a 20-kill effort against Athens. Belsher also had 23 blocks and 60 digs on the defensive end.

The wins in New Berlin improved Lincolnwood’s record to 14-2 on the season, with the Lancers also picking up a key 25-16, 25-15 MSM Conference victory over South County on Thursday, Sept. 16.

The Lancers will take on Gillespie at home on Monday, Sept. 20, with the Orange team playing at 5 p.m. and the JV and varsity to follow.
