Lincolnwood Softball Rolls To Second Win

Posted

COVID-19 protocols kept Lincolnwood softball from squaring off against Hillsboro on Friday, April 30, but some quick work gave the Lancers another opponent as they took on Mt. Pulaski at Kiwanis Field in Raymond.

The Lancers would fare well against the Hilltoppers of the two-L variety, beating the visitors 25-10 in four innings.

Mt. Pulaski would bat first and plated six runs in the top of the opening inning, but Lincolnwood answered with 11 runs of their own, the first of two frames in which they would score double digits.

The first four batters reached base for the Lancers, with a walk, an error, another walk and a single by Brittany Slightom leading to Lincolnwood’s first two runs. A pair of wild pitches would yield two more runs to make it 6-4 before Mt. Pulaski recorded its first out.

Back-to-back walks chased the Hilltoppers’ starter from the game, but their relief corps did not fare much better. A single by Sophie Rainwater would plate another run, but a potential game-tying score was cut down at the plate after a single by Desi Pitchford.

Even with two outs, Lincolnwood was far from done as they took their first lead on a single by Sidney Glick to make it 7-6. Glick would score on an error shortly after to make it 8-6 in Lincolnwood’s favor.

A walk to Avery Pope, a triple by Cassie Krager, a single by Brittany Slightom and a walk to Taryn Millburg, along with two errors and a wild pitch, would lead to three more runs before Mt. Pulaski could stop the bleeding.

Despite the offensive explosion in the first, the game had signs of being a barn burner in the early going as Mt. Pulask tacked on two runs in the second to make it 11-8, followed by two in the third to cut the Lancer lead to one.

Desi Pitchford walked to lead off the third inning and scored three batters later after Sidney Glick was hit by a pitch, Avery Pope struck out and Cassie Krager singled to score Pitchford. Glick also scored on the single to make it 13-10 in Lincolnwood’s favor.

It looked as if Mt. Pulaski might get out of trouble as they got their second out on a fielder’s choice, but the wheels would fall off soon after.

A single by Taryn Millburg and a double from Paige Rainwater scored two more runs, while base runners continued to march across the bags. An error and a walk put Pitchford at the plate for the second time in the inning and the junior came through with a double that scored three runs and made it 18-10.

Glick would be hit by a pitch for the second time in the inning and Pope walked, with Pitchford moving to third on one wild pitch and scoring on a second. Back-to-back singles by Krager and Slightom would make the total 22-10 before Mt. Pulaski got out of the inning with a ground out.

Lincolnwood starting pitcher Taryn Millburg would give up a double in the top of the fourth, but struck out the next three batters to set up a shortened game for her team.

Needing three runs to end the game by the four-inning, 15-run rule, Lincolnwood went to work, with Paige Rainwater ripping a double, followed by back-to-back walks to load the bases.

Mt. Pulaski would get the next two outs, but singles by Avery Pope and Katelyn Payne would send the Lancer faithful home happy.

All told, Lincolnwood would batter the Toppers to the tune of 15 hits, while also benefitting from six Mt. Pulaski errors and 11 walks.

Millburg gave up 10 runs, but only four were earned as Lincolnwood had some fielding issues of their own with five errors. The freshman hurler walked just one batter and struck out six in earning the win for the Lancers.

At the plate, Cassie Krager and Brittany Slightom both had three hits and four RBIs in the win, while Paige Rainwater and Desi Pitchford both had two hits. Pitchford also had three RBIs and three runs scored.

With 35 runs scored in two games, Lincolnwood looks to keep the offense going on Monday, May 3 as they take on the Calvary-Lutheran co-op team at Springfield Lutheran. After that, they’ll play Carlinville on Tuesday, May 4, in Carlinville, followed by a road trip to Edinburg on Wednesday, May 5.
