The Lincolnwood boys golf team had hopes of advancing out of the Marquette Regional at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton on Wednesday, Sept. 29, but a tough field and a tricky course had something to say about that goal. Despite the challenges, the Lancers still sent two players through to the sectional and finished a solid sixth as a team, shooting a 369 on the par-72 links.
The sectional qualifiers, Nate Brockmeyer and Will Jenkins, earned their spots by finishing in the top 10 amongst individuals not on a sectional qualifying team. Brockmeyer was solid, shooting an 85 to tie for ninth place overall as he shot a 42 on the back nine, followed by a 43 on the front half of the course.
Jenkins’ path to sectionals was a little more complicated as he shot a 48 on the back nine to start, then went 6-over-par (42) on the front nine for a 90. That put the Lincolnwood senior in a tie for one of the final three sectional qualifying spots with Hillsboro’s Drake Vogel and Dom Haggard and Litchfield’s Ian Otto and Brawly Jacobs.
Jenkins would keep the momentum from his front nine going as he grabbed one of the sectional spots in the all-Montgomery County playoff, with Haggard and Vogel getting the other two.
As they have been for most of the year, the rest of the Lincolnwood lineup was closely bunched, with only four strokes separating the third through sixth players.
Levi Weir shot a 96 on the day with a pair of 48s, while Brady Schmedeke shot a 98 with two 49s. Colton Tishkau was a stroke behind Schmedeke with a 99, shooting 50 on the front and 49 on the back, while Lance Weitekamp added in a 100, with a pair of 50s. All told, Lincolnwood put all six players in the top 43 of the 74-player tournament.
Brockmeyer and Jenkins now move on to the McLeansboro Sectional at Green Hills Golf Course in Mt. Vernon on Monday, Oct. 4, with the other individual qualifiers and the top three teams - Vandalia (320), Alton Marquette (337) and Father McGivney (345).
Even though the season came to an end for the rest of the Lancers, Schmedeke, Brockmeyer and Weitekamp are all underclassmen, meaning a return sectional trip could be in the cards in 2022.
