The Lincolnwood boys golf team tasted defeat for the first time this year on Monday, Aug. 23, but rebounded the following day with a trio of wins against MSM Conference competition.
On Monday, the Lancers hosted Auburn, Carlinville and Mt. Olive at Shoal Creek Golf Course, but were minus two of their regular top six, Will Jenkins and Levi Weir, who are double dipping this season as members of both the golf and soccer teams.
Lincolnwood still put up a fight, but weren’t able to get past the Trojans or Cavaliers as Auburn shot a 164, followed by Carlinville with a 186 and Lincolnwood with a 194. Mt. Olive rounded out the field with a 209.
After earning medalist honors the first two matches of the season, Nate Brockmeyer remained consistent and finished second in Monday’s match. The Lincolnwood junior shot a 38 with seven pars and two bogies to tie Auburn’s Joshua Bailey for second place individually. Carlinville’s Henry Kufa was the only other player in the 30s on the par-36 nine-hole course, shooting an even-par 36 to earn medalist honors.
The other Lancers were all in the low to mid 50s, starting with Morrisonville sophomores Brady Schmedeke (50) and Lance Weitekamp (52) and Lincolnwood senior Michael Graham (54). Junior Drake Germann (55) and senior Colton Tischkau (58) rounded out the top six for Coach Verne Pinkston’s club.
In addition to the varsity rounds, freshmen Drew Gilpin and Jonah Elvidge also played junior varsity rounds. Gilpin finished with a 50, while Elvidge carded a 56.
At Terry Park
The Lancers would rebound from their first setback of the season with a win at Terry Park in Palmyra the following day, Aug. 24.
Levi Weir and Will Jenkins both returned to the fold and paid instant dividends as both finished in the top four to help the Lancers to a win.
Weir not only contributed a scoring round, but earned medalist honors for the match with a 5-over-par 40 on the narrow confines of Terry Park. Weir had birdies on the first and fifth holes, with pars on three other holes.
Brady Schmedeke and Nate Brockmeyer were just behind Weir with a 42 and a 43, while Jenkins added a 48 to give the Lancers a 173 on the day. That score would be good enough to edge South County by four strokes, with Northwestern (200) and Mt. Olive (241) finishing third and fourth.
Lance Weitekamp was the Lancers’ fifth man on Tuesday, matching the 48 put up by Will Jenkins, while Drew Gilpin played his first varsity round with a 59.
Lincolnwood will continue to be tested in their next match, which comes on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Litchfield. In addition to the host Purple Panthers, the Lancers will also face SCC juggernaut Vandalia and Taylorville at the Litchfield Country Club.
