After a break of more than a month, the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series started back up in September, with races in Beckley, WV and Millfield, OH.

Round 10 of the 12-round series, dubbed The Mountaineer, took place at Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia on Sept. 12.

Travis Lentz of Walshville and Jhak Walker of Morrisonville both made the trip to The Mountaineer and came back with a pair of top five finishes.

After flirting with victory at the Hoosier and Mason-Dixon GNCC races, Lentz finally got the elusive victory in the 65cc class, running a time of 1:24:33.043 for five laps to win by just over six seconds.

Walker also did well, scoring his fifth top five finish in 10 GNCC races, with a fifth place finish in Super Mini in a time of 1:37:02.810 for seven laps.

Lentz picked up another top five on Sept. 26, at Burr Oak, Round 11 of the GNCC at Sunday Creek Raceway in Millfield, OH. Again running in the 65cc class, Lentz finished third in a time of 1:29:05.20 for five laps. His time was 16 seconds behind Nash Peerson of Fairview, NC, and 2:58 behind Caleb Wood of Donalds, SC.

Walker nearly did the same as he collected a sixth place finish in a time of 1:32:47.404 for six laps in the Super Mini class. Cole Forbes of Richmond, VA won the race in a time of 1:25:13.259, also completing six laps. The victory was Forbes’ ninth GNCC win this year, with Chase Landers finishing first in the only two events Forbes did not start.

On Oct. 10, the duo raced at the Buckwheat 100, in Newburg, WV and picked up two more solid finishes. Jhak Walker ran a 1:39:11.85 for 8 laps to finish sixth overall, while Travis Lentz was second, running a 1:31:28.457 for six laps.

The final race of the GNCC series will be at the historic Ironman Raceway on Oct. 23-24, in Crawfordsville, IN. Both Walker and Lentz ran the Hoosier at Ironman earlier this year, placing sixth and second respectively.
