Lawrence Monk, 89, of Coffeen, died on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020, at 8:06 a.m. at his residence.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 12 to 2 p.m. at Toberman-Dean Funeral Home in Coffeen. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jeff Hemken, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsboro, officiating. Burial will be held in Green Hill Cemetery in Van Burensburg.

Mr. Monk was born June 3, 1931, in Basin, WV, to Willis H. and Myrtle (Gravely) Monk. He married Anita Lee Childers on Feb. 8, 1958, in Virginia, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 16, 2015.

During his career, he worked at Brach’s Candy in Chicago for 34 years before his retirement. He was a member of East Fork Baptist Church in Coffeen and loved NASCAR racing, being outdoors and on his lawmower and spending time with family.

Mr. Monk lived in the south suburbs of Chicago, Sauk Village and Coffeen throughout his lifetime.

He is survived by two children, Benita (husband Wayne) Biella of Crown Point, IN, and Debbie (husband Gary) Durbin of Coffeen; five grandchildren, Rob (Brianne) Biella, Adam (wife Jessica) Biella, Maegan Durbin, Amber (husband Joe) Battistella and Sean (partner Kaitlin) Durbin; 12 great-grandchildren; and brother, Frank Monk of Delaware.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Monk was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Lawrence Monk, Jr. in 1959 and Kimberly Ann Monk in infancy in 1972; one sister; and six brothers.

Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
