LaWanda Hannig, 94, of Springfield, died on Friday, Nov. 8, surrounded by her loving family.
Cremation was provided by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.
Mrs. Hannig was born on April 16, 1930, in DuQuoin, the daughter of Henry Rash and Della Joiner Hensley. She married Louis Bernard Hannig on Aug. 4, 1951, in Pocahontas, AR, and he preceded her in death in 2016. Together the couple spent their lives caring for her family with dedication, warmth and an unwavering devotion.
Raised in Rosiclare, she could read and write at an early age. She entered grade school as a second grader. Upon graduation from high school, she moved to Springfield to work as a secretary for the Illinois Department of Revenue. It was in Springfield where she met her future husband. In 1952, the couple started a family insurance and real estate business that remained successful until it was sold following his death in 2016.
Mrs. Hannig had an incredible ability to make those around her feel loved and valued. Her nurturing spirit, quick wit and genuine care for others left a lasting impact on all who knew her. She believed in the power of family, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
She is survived by her sons, Gary (Betsy) Hannig, Randy Hannig, Greg Hannig and Louis (Julie) Hannig; grandchildren, Randy Jr., Elliott, Olivia, Jessica, Sam and Nick Hannig; great-grandchildren, Max, Lincoln and Hudson.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hannig was preceded in death by her son, Terry Hannig; brothers, Agatha, Robert, Clifton and Harold Rash; and beloved only sister, Lenora Austin.
