The Nokomis High School baseball team picked up their third win of the season on Thursday, May 20, with an 8-1 victory over Taylorville.
Despite the lopsided final score, the game was neck-and-neck for the first five innings, before Nokomis blew it open in the final two.
Neither team scored until the fourth, with Nokomis finding their first run after Benny Clavin singled, Elijah Aumann reached on an error and Matthew Ulrici singled, with Clavin coming home on an error by the Taylorville shortstop. Taylorville answered back in the bottom of the inning, with Jaden Mathon poping a two-out single, then scoring after another Tornado single, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
After another scoreless inning, Nokomis broke free and touched up starter Kamren Heimsness for three runs. Clavin led off the inning with a single and stole second, with the senior moving to third when Aumann’s sacrifice bunt turned into a fielder’s choice when the Tornadoes unsuccessfully tried to get Clavin at third.
Aumann would steal second and move to third on a single by Landon Engelman that made it 2-1 in Nokomis’ favor when Clavin crossed home plate.
Two-one became 3-1 and 4-1 after Cooper Bertolino reached on an error and Matthew Ulrici singled to short before Taylorville got out of the inning. The Tornadoes threatened in the sixth with a double and a single, but couldn’t cut into Nokomis’ lead.
In the seventh, Hunter Broers singled, followed by a fielder’s choice from Austin Thornton and a single by Clavin. With one out and two on, Aumann doubled to bring in Thornton and Clavin and make it 6-1. A single by Engelman would drive in Nokomis’ seventh run of the game and the junior second baseman would make it 8-1 three batters later after a single by Bertolino, a fielder’s choice by Ulrici and a single by Brenton Lyons.
Austin Thornton would get the final three outs on the mound to sew up the victory and improve Nokomis’ record to 3-8.
Thornton gave up three hits in three scoreless innings of relief to record the win, striking out one and walking one along the way. Matthew Ulrici earned the start and gave up two hits and one unearned run with five strikeouts and three walks.
Nokomis outhit the Tornadoes 13-5, with Benny Clavin going 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Redskins. Landon Engelman, Brenton Lyons and Ulrici also had two hits apiece for Nokomis.
