Lancers Stop Tiger Win Streak

The Lincolnwood-Morrisonville volleyball team snapped a 17-game win streak by Greenfield-Northwestern on Tuesday, Aug. 31, and in the process, avenged one of their only two losses from the 2020-21 season.

The Lancers, who went 14-2 last year, fell to the Tigers 27-25 and 25-20 last April as Greenfield-Northwestern finished the year on a 16-win run with a 19-1 record.

The Tigers also won their first match of this season over Gillespie, but Lincolnwood put a halt to their streak with a dominant 25-16, 25-16 victory at the Woodshed in Raymond.

The Lancers jumped out to a strong 8-0 lead in game one as they broke the Tigers’ serve then benefitted from the jump serve of Sidney Glick. Glick led the team in service points on Tuesday, posting 12 with three aces.

Junior hitter Hailee Belsher also came up big in the opening stretch with three of her team-best 14 kills, but Greenfield-Northwestern refused to go away quietly and rallied all the way back to tie the score at 8-8.

After some cat and mouse between the two clubs, Lincolnwood exploded again. With Avery Pope on the serving line, Lincolnwood peeled off nine straight points to take an 18-9 lead before the Tigers called a time out and stopped the bleeding.

With aces from Pope and others and kills from Belsher and Desi Pitchford, Lincolnwood built up their lead and never looked back, getting their 25th point on a net call against the Tigers to win game one 25-16.

In game two, Lincolnwood tried to pull away again, getting blocks from Belsher and Tessa Funderburk to take an early 4-1 advantage, but Greenfield-Northwestern came back and kept the Lancers within a few points for much of the early going.

Senior Baylee Bilbruck served up a pair of aces with a darting jump serve to get the Tigers to 9-9, but a hit out of bounds gave the ball back to Lincolnwood, who never let the visitors get that close again.

The Lancers led 11-9, then put together a run that boosted that margin to 16-10 to give them the upper hand in the match. As they continued to string together points, Greenfield-Northwestern was unable to do the same and trailed by as many as 10 at one point.

A Jazmin Seaton-Hobson kill gave Lincolnwood the chance to serve for game point and Pope scored her team-best fourth ace to finish off the win.

The game was a demonstration of the versatility and strength of the Lancers this year, with contributions coming up and down the lineup from multiple sources.

Glick also had three kills and two assists to go with her serving stats, while Belsher had four blocks, four digs and two aces of her own.

Desi Pitchford chipped in four kills and three points, while Haelee Damm had five points, five kills and seven digs, three behind Madyson Bockewitz for the team lead.

In addition to the four aces, Pope had eight points, six digs and seven assists, giving the Lancers a two-setter format with Tessa Funderburk (13 assists) that allows their hitters opportunity after opportunity.

On Tuesday, those opportunities resulted in 30 kills, 21 more than Greenfield-Northwestern, who fell to 1-1 on the year.

Now 3-0, Lincolnwood has a week off until their next match-up on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Ramsey. After that, the Lancers start play in the Montgomery County Invitational, held in Raymond and Hillsboro on Sept. 10-11.
