The Lincolnwood High School soccer team celebrated senior night with a 6-0 victory over Taylorville on Monday, April 12, then followed that up with a 10-0 victory over Calvary the following night.
While the 16 goal explosion demonstrated the Lancers’ offensive might, Monday’s game was anything but a sure thing in the first half. Lincolnwood had the ball in the Taylorville half for most of the opening 40 minutes, but the Tornadoes did well to keep them from running away with the contest.
Lincolnwood’s first chance came just eight minutes into the contest, when a miscue by the Taylorville defense allowed for a loose ball to roll into the box. Elijah Aumann would charge on for a shot, but the Taylorville keeper covered up the ball just before Aumann could get a foot on it.
After a few other chances, the Lancers would finally break through just before the midway point of the half. Levi Weir would take a free kick from just outside the box with 21:55 to play and struck a hard shot right at the Taylorville keeper, who got the initial save, but the momentum of the shot carried it into the net.
Lincolnwood worked to add onto their lead, with Wyatt Kistner putting two shots on that nearly increased the margin, but just missed.
It seemed as if the score would stay at 1-0 going into halftime, but Lincolnwood’s aggressiveness on offense paid dividends with 14 seconds left on the clock.
Elijah Aumann worked to break free from the Taylorville defense just inside the 18-yard box, when he was tripped by a Taylorville defender. The play was deemed a penalty and Aumann drilled the free chance past the diving Tornado keeper to make it 2-0 in the final seconds of the half.
Be it the momentum from Aumann’s score, the change in direction to go slightly more with the wind or just the fact that the Lancers’ possession would finally pay off, the second half was a much different ball game.
Weir scored twice more to collect the hat trick, while Aumann and Luke Webb also added goals in the second half to dominate the Tornadoes.
The win bumped the Lancers’ record up to 3-5 on the season and gave the seven seniors something to celebrate.
Lincolnwood vs. Calvary
Tuesday’s final result made Monday’s contest look like a barn burner as the Lancers rolled to a 10-0 victory.
Seven of the ten goals came in the first half, with eight different players scoring in the game for the Lancers, including three of the seniors.
Sam Terneus, Benny Clavin and Gavin Lipe all found the back of the net in the win over the Saints, with Clavin also drawing an assist on one of the goals.
After coming close against Taylorville, Wyatt Kistner broke through to score twice and assisted on two goals against Calvary, while freshman Kennedy DeWerff matched him with two goals of his own.
Levi Weir and Elijah Aumann would both add to their season totals with one goal each, while Will Jenkins also ventured out of the goalkeeping position to score for the first time this season. Freshmen Austin Thornton (two) and Cade Johnson (one) contributed assists in the win as the Lancers put 16 shots on goal.
The victory moved the Lancers to 4-5 on the year and gave them a perfect record in MSM Conference play (Lutheran and Calvary are the only other teams to have soccer in the conference).
After an April 14 tilt against Riverton on Wednesday, the Lancers will close out the season with games on Friday, April 16, and Saturday, April 17. On Friday, they will play the Gillespie/Litchfield co-op team at Lloyd Hill Field in Litchfield, followed by a Saturday contest at 11 a.m. against Williamsville at Terry Todt Field in Raymond.
