Lancers Improve In Loss To MSM Foe South County

After picking up their first win of the year on Monday against Mt. Olive, the Lincolnwood girls basketball team entered their home game on Dec. 9 with some momentum. While they wouldn’t pick up a win over MSM Conference foe South County, they would have a strong finish and continued to improve as the season goes on.

The visitors from the Franklin/Waverly/New Berlin co-op would win 42-20, but 19 of the 22 points of the margin came in the first half. The Vipers jumped out to a 17-3 lead after eight minutes, with Taryn Millburg hitting a three for Lincolnwood’s only points.

The Lancer defense held South County to just five points in the second quarter, but were held scoreless by the Viper defense to keep them from cutting into the lead.

Down 22-3 going into the second half, Lincolnwood made strides, getting eight points in the quarter to nearly quadruple their point total. South County added in 12 points of their own and led 34-11 after three quarters.

Lincolnwood continued their progression and had their most successful offensive quarter with nine points, shaving one point off the Vipers’ lead by the final horn.

Both Avery Pope and Taryn Millburg led Lincolnwood with seven points apiece, each hitting a three in the game. Haelee Damm also had a three for her point total, while Cora Stevens and Lilly Terneus added in two and one respectively.

Lincolnwood’s next game will be on Monday, Dec. 13, against Mt. Pulaski at home, followed by a road game against Greenfield-Northwestern in Palmyra.
