Just two days after meeting in the third place game of the Morrisonville Tournament, the Lincolnwood and Hillsboro volleyball teams squared off again. While the end result of a Lancer win was the same as Saturday’s match, the Toppers didn’t go down without a fight at the Woodshed on Monday, Oct. 4.
The Toppers fell 25-11, 25-13 in Saturday’s match in Morrisonville, but went toe-to-toe with the Lancers in a 25-20, 25-17 affair.
Hillsboro jumped out in front with a 5-0 lead behind the serving of Alayna McCario and held off the Lancers until the hosts were able to battle back to make it 7-7.
Ties would be the theme for the next few moments as the two squads went back and forth, eventually settling at 11-11 when Lincolnwood got a side out and sent Sidney Glick to the serving line. The Lancer senior, who led Lincolnwood with 12 service points on the night, served up five straight points to give her team what would turn out to be an insurmountable lead.
Hillsboro would be able to get within four points late in the game, but Lincolnwood finished off the win to hold the early advantage.
Hoping to force a third game, Hillsboro jumped out to another early lead and was up by as many as four, 8-4, in the early going. The Lancers slowly clawed their way back into the contest and again received a healthy dose of serving from Glick to build up another lead.
Glick served up five more points after Lincolnwood got the ball back up 12-11 and led by as many as 10 late in the game before Hillsboro put in a late charge to cut the lead to eight at the end of the contest.
In addition to Glick’s expertise at the serving line, Lincolnwood also got 13 kills from Hailee Belsher. Tessa Funderburk and Avery Pope led the Lancers with 10 and nine assists, while Desi Pitchford also had five kills in the match. Defensively, Jasmine Vickery had 12 digs, while Belsher added 11 and Glick finished with eight. Belsher also had a block in Lincolnwood’s 22nd win of the season.
Hillsboro will try to get back on track on Thursday, Oct. 7, at home against Gillespie. The Lancers will be at home twice more this week, with games against Calvary on Thursday, Oct. 8, and Tri-City on Friday, Oct. 9. The future Lancers who participated in the recent Dig For A Cure clinic will also be showing off their skills starting at 4:45 p.m.
