Lancers Avenge Losses To Vipers

Posted

Earlier this season, the South County golf teams knocked off Lincolnwood in both the boys and girls MSM Conference golf tournaments. On Friday, Sept. 24, the Lancers avenged both of those losses at Shoal Creek Golf Course in Raymond.

The Lincolnwood girls picked up their third win of the season with a 237-251 victory over South County, while the Lincolnwood boys improved to 21-5 with a 171, good enough to beat the Vipers and Northwestern.

South County’s Grace Rector took medalist honors, shooting a 44 on the par-36 nine-hole course, but the next five best scores went to the Lancers.

Marisa Webb led Lincolnwood with a 55, while Kaylee Gerlach added in a 59. Shelby Hattenbach and Anna Jones chipped in a 61 and a 62, while Jhia Walker was the Lancers’ fifth player with a 63. Jenna Matli also played for Lincolnwood on Friday, shooting a 73 for the Lancers, who improved to 3-17 on the year.

On the boys’ side, Lincolnwood’s 171 was good enough to beat South County by 10, despite an inauspicious start for the Lancers. On his first shot of the match, South County’s Brandt Crews aced the par-3 third hole at Shoal Creek, giving the Vipers a two-stroke lead before most players had finished a hole.

Things would settle down, though, with Lincolnwood going on to get a 38 from Nate Brockmeyer, who earned medalist honors for the match.

Will Jenkins was just behind his teammate with a 40, while Michael Graham and Levi Weir had the other two scoring rounds with a 45 and a 48. Brady Schmedeke and Colton Tischkau rounded out the lineup with a pair of 53s as Lincolnwood improved to 21-5 on the season.

Lincolnwood’s JV also played in the match, shooting a 210, which was seven strokes better than Northwestern’s 217.

Lance Weitekamp shot a 44 for the JV, which would have been a scoring round for any of the varsity squads on Friday. Drew Gilpin (51), Jerod Klein (55) and Jonah Elvidge (60) also had scoring rounds for the junior varsity, with Drake Germann also playing with a 63.

The Lincolnwood boys will play at Shambolee Golf Course in Petersburg on Monday, Sept. 27, followed by a trip to Edgewood Golf Course in Auburn on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The Lincolnwood girls also play at Edgewood, on Monday, Sept. 27, against South County and Auburn.

Both teams also start the postseason this week, with the Lincolnwood boys playing at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton on Sept. 29, and the Lincolnwood girls playing at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River on Sept. 30.
