The Lincolnwood boys golf team got off to a strong start to their season on Aug. 12, as three players finished in the top 10 at the Meridian Early Bird Invite at the Moweaqua Golf Course on Thursday.

The Lancers, who finished second to Maroa-Forsyth by four strokes in the team ranks, were led by Will Jenkins, Nate Brockmeyer and Levi Weir, who took up the third, fourth and fifth places in the individual standings.

Jenkins, one of five seniors on this year’s roster and one of two playing on Thursday, led the way with a 77, highlighted by a pair of birdies and nine pars. After shooting a 2-over-par 38 on the front half of the course with a birdie and five pars, Jenkins went 3-over on the back nine with another birdie and four more pars.

Brockmeyer would be three strokes back in fourth, shooting a 42 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine, with a birdie on the par-5 14th hole.

Weir, who shot an 81 to finish fifth, also had a pair of birdies, getting one on the ninth hole to finish the front half with a 41, then getting one on the 18th hole to finish the back half with a 40.

Morrisonville’s Brady Schmedeke, brother of one of last year’s senior standouts, Braxton Schmedeke, contributed the fourth scoring round with a 90, while another Mohawk-turned-Lancer, Lance Weitekamp, was the Lancers’ fifth man with a 92. Schmedeke shot a pair of 45s for 18 holes, while Weitekamp shot a 44 on the front and a 48 on the back.

Lincolnwood’s 328 as a team was just four strokes behind Maroa-Forsyth, who also co-ops with Warrensburg-Latham for golf. Tyler Davis led Trojans with a 77, four strokes behind medalist Cody Dodson of Decatur St. Teresa.

Lincolnwood will have their first home match of the young season on Monday, July 16, with Greenville, North Mac, South County and Mt. Olive also teeing off at Shoal Creek Golf Course in Raymond.
