With just two games left on the schedule, the Lincolnwood High School soccer team seems to be peaking at the right moment.
After a 2-0 loss to Lutheran on Sept. 17 and a 1-1 tie against South Central Conference champ Hillsboro on Sept. 20, the Lancers have been red hot. The orange and black were 5-5-1 following their match with Hillsboro, but have won five straight games to increase their win total to 10, a magic number for Head Coach Joe Webb.
Webb entered his ninth season at the helm of his alma mater with 90 wins. During the latest winning streak, Webb’s countdown to the 100 win milestone has dwindled down to zero, making him the second Lincolnwood coach to reach the century mark in addition to Webb’s head coach, Dennis Umberger.
The latest three wins of the countdown came this week as the Lancers outscored Athens, Vandalia and Greenville 14-0.
The week would start with a road trip to Athens as the Lancers squeezed out a 1-0 victory over the Warriors. Elijah Aumann broke the scoreless tie with his 13th goal of the season, taking a pass from Wyatt Kistner for the go-ahead score.
Aumann would add three more goals in Lincolnwood’s 11-0 victory over Vandalia on Tuesday, Sept. 28, as nine different players scored in the win.
Mason Stauder, Luke Webb, Will Jenkins, Ian Keller, Wyatt Kistner, Donny Daugherty, Braden Whalen and Levi Weir all scored in the game, with Kennedy DeWerff and Austin Thornton picking up two assists each as well. Aumann also had two assists to go with his three goals, while Kistner, Daugherty and Weir also had assists in Lincolnwood’s ninth win of the season.
Webb’s milestone win came on Thursday, Sept. 30, in the Lancers’ 2-0 senior night victory over Greenville. Levi Weir, who was honored prior to the game with fellow seniors Luke Webb and Will Jenkins, scored one of the goals, while sophomore Austin Thornton had the other score.
The three shutouts upped Gabe Armentrout’s total to seven on the year, his first as the Lancers’ main goalkeeper.
The Lancers have little time to celebrate the wins as their final two games of the season are at Carlinville (14-2) on Monday, Oct. 4 and at Williamsville (13-5-1) on Thursday, Oct. 7.
Monday’s Carlinville game at 6:30 p.m. will raise funds for Relay for Life and will also raise awareness for Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD) in honor of the late Grace Herschelman.
