The 2021 season came to an end for a pair of Lincolnwood golfers on Monday, Oct. 4, as Will Jenkins and Nate Brockmeyer wrapped up their seasons at the Class 1A McLeansboro Sectional at Green Hills Golf Club in Mt. Vernon.
No one outside of the top 15 advanced to the sectional, with Marissa’s Caleb Trieb grabbing the last individual berth with an 8-over-par 79.
Jenkins wasn’t far off that pace in his final varsity round as he shot an 86 to finish in a tie for 41st. The Lincolnwood senior started on the back nine and went double bogey, par, birdie on the first three holes, shooting a four on the 537-yard 12th hole.
Two pars would follow, with four straight double bogies wrapping up the back nine as Jenkins stood at +11 at the midway point.
The front nine would go a lot better for Jenkins, who had six pars, two bogeys and one double on the second set of holes. His 39 was just four strokes over par as he finished 15-over for the match with an 86.
Not only was Jenkins’ score better than his regional round, where he finished 18-over, but it was also his best sectional score and placement in the tournament. Jenkins also made it to sectionals as a sophomore and junior, shooting a 107 to finish 90th in 2019 and a 96 in 2020 to finish 46th.
The trip to Mt. Vernon wasn’t quite as successful for Brockmeyer, but was still a solid effort for the junior who had been the Lancers’ top man throughout the year.
Brockmeyer started on the front nine and finished the round with a 46, posting three pars, two bogies three double bogies and a triple bogey to finish 11-over.
He’d increase that par total to five on the back nine, but the other four holes consisted of three double bogies and a triple bogey as Brockmeyer finished the day with a 91, 20 strokes over par.
Even with the struggles, which were compounded by a lingering illness for the junior ace, Brockmeyer still beat his score from last year, a 93, by two strokes.
While Jenkins took his final swings in the orange and black, Brockmeyer will look forward to next year as the Lancers bring back three members of this year’s regional squad, with sophomores Brady Schmedeke and Lance Weitekamp set to return as well.
