It was a solid start to the season for the Hillsboro girls golf team as they tied for first in their opening match of the season at Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton on Aug. 17.
The Lady Hiltoppers shot a 230 to match the host Bulldogs shot for shot. Often a tie will be broken with a fifth score, but both teams featured lineups of four players, so the tie stood. Gillespie would finish third in the match with 321, while Vandalia was third with 346. Greenville also sent players, but did not have a team score.
The Toppers’ effort was led by senior Meagan Jorn, who showed why she is one of Hillsboro’s top returning players in 2021. Jorn shot a match best 47 on the day to win medalist honors by three strokes over Gillespie’s Chloe Seggara and Greenville’s Rachel Ronat.
Jorn had a tough final hole, taking a seven on the par-4 ninth after finding the water, but before that, she had not been more than two strokes over par on any hole, with a pair of pars on number seven and number eight.
Alex Frailey was just behind her teammate with a 51, while Sam Frailey and Aurelie Granito rounded out the scoring with a 64 and a 68.
“Alex played very well,” Coach Son Clayton said. “If not for a couple bad holes, she could have been in the 40s.”
Following the trip to Staunton, Hillsboro flew the coop to Cardinal Golf Course in Effingham on Aug. 19, for a match-up with the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes.
The Shoes would defend their home course thanks to a solid effort from Abigail Wortman and Alaina Helmink, who shared medalist honors with a pair of 46s.
Hillsboro would counter with Alex Frailey, who shot a 49, and Meagan Jorn, who added a 51, but the Wooden Shoes would be the victors, 201 to 231. Sam Frailey (64) and Aurelie Granito (67) also played for Hillsboro.
Hillsboro ended the week with their first tournament of the season, the eight-team Rochester Rocket Invite at Lincoln Greens on Saturday, Aug. 21.
Not only did the Toppers have to dodge a few rain drops, but they had to face off against some staunch competition in the form of bigger schools from the Springfield area.
“There was some unbelievable competition,” Coach Clayton said.
Hillsboro would finish seventh with a 456, 25 strokes behind Auburn, one of the only other smaller schools in attendance. Sacred Heart-Griffin was first with a 338, followed by Springfield (348), Rochester (369), Glenwood (370) and Williamsville (399).
Meagan Jorn led the Hiltoppers, posting three pars and rounds of 44 and 49 for a 93 for her 18-hole tournament. Jorn was just six strokes from a spot in the top 10.
“The course was long and tough, but she played solid golf on the front nine, with no big numbers, paring number one and number six,” Clayton said of Jorn. “She had some trouble on the back, but had a par thrown in to get in under 50.”
Alex Frailey was a big number or two away from joining Jorn under 100, but settled for a 109. A 10 on number two and a 9 on number 18 spoiled what other wise may have been two rounds under 40 for the HHS junior, who is playing much better than this time last year.
Sam Frailey would add in a 122 for the Toppers, with Aurelie Granito finishing with a 138.
“If these girls continue their great play and continue improving, they will do very well the rest of the season and will have great opportunities to win some team matches.
