The fourth quarter was a little troublesome for the Nokomis Lady Redskins in their last two games against Springfield Lutheran on Feb. 25 and against Central A&M on Feb. 27. Against the Crusaders, the disadvantage didn’t cost the Lady Redskins a win, but they weren’t as fortunate on Saturday in Moweaqua.
In their game against Lutheran, who co-ops with Calvary for girls basketball, Nokomis turned a 9-7 first quarter deficit into a 25-19 lead, thanks in large part to the hot shooting of Addison Dangbar. Dangbar scored nine of Nokomis’ 18 points and hit her second of three threes she’d have in the game.
Nokomis continued to build their lead in the second half as they held the Crusaders to just four points in the third quarter and led 34-23 at the end of the frame.
That margin would grow to 14 points on Dangbar’s third three with 5:45 to play, and remained at 14 with 2:40 left when Kristen Stauder connected on a layup after a nice pass by Emma Sneddon.
Up 39-25, it looked as if the Redskins had the game well in hand, but Lutheran would make a contest out of it in the final three minutes.
Behind the play of Delaney Scheidenhelm, Lutheran chipped away at the lead, getting it down to 39-37 with less than ten seconds to go.
Nokomis would miss a free throw with 8.9 seconds left, giving Lutheran one last shot at sending the game to overtime or the Redskins home with a loss.
Scheidenhelm would work the ball in close and tried to put up a shot, but the play was well defended by Nokomis, who escaped with the two-point win.
Dangbar would lead Nokomis with 15 points as she went 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from behind the three-point line. Only Scheidenhelm would have more points in the game, scoring 16.
Hailey Engelman and Audrey Sabol would net seven points apiece, with Sabol grabbing 12 rebounds. Kristen Stauder would have five points, four boards and three assists, while Natalie Engelman added three points in her first game back since Feb. 11 due to COVID-19 protocols.
Emma Sneddon would wrap up the scoring with two points, while Mia Fesser tied Stauder for the team lead in assists with two.
Nokomis would get another good shooting night from Addison Dangbar on Saturday as the sophomore hit 4-of-6 threes and 5-of-9 shots overall. Unfortunately, Central A&M would outscore the Redskins 19-13 in the fourth quarter to break a 29-29 third quarter tie and hand Nokomis their third loss of the year.
Three of Dangbar’s four threes came in the second half as Nokomis relied on Audrey Sabol in the early going. The sophomore forward scored eight of Nokomis’ 15 first half points as the Skins trailed 19-15 at halftime.
Dangbar’s hot hand would help erase that four point deficit as she hit a pair of threes and a two to help make it 29-29 going into the final eight minutes.
Both Dangbar and Natalie Engelman would hit threes in the fourth quarter and Nokomis got four points from Sabol and three from Hailey Engelman in addition to the treys.
Central A&M would respond, getting eight points from Jilyan Burgener and seven points from Julia Braundmeier. The killer for the Redskins was the Raiders’ performance at the free-throw line in the fourth. After going 3-for-6 in the first three quarters, Central A&M went 10-for-15 in the fourth to seal the victory.
Braundmeier would lead all scorers with 17 points, while Alana Harlow and Jilyan Burgener added 15 and 10 for the Raiders.
Nokomis was led by Audrey Sabol and Addison Dangbar, who had 30 of Nokomis’ 42 points. Sabol added 16 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, while Dangbar added in four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Natalie Engelman would finish with six points, while Hailey Engelman and Kristen Stauder had three apiece. Hailey Engelman and Mia Fesser led the team in assists with four and three respectively, while Stauder, Engelman and Emma Sneddon joined Dangbar with four rebounds each.
