An 11-run fourth inning for the Nokomis softball team ended a 25-hit slugfest early as the Lady Redskins won by the decisively non-softball score of 24-7.
With a run total that rivaled the undefeated Redskin football team, Nokomis jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After walks to Mia Fesser and Addison Dangbar and a strikeout started the game, Nokomis put together four straight singles from Aubrey Jaros, Karli Wanger, Kristen Stauder and Emma Hill to take a 3-0 advantage.
Calvary would get Baylee Cesaretti on a fly ball to center field, but Wanger scored to up the lead to four runs before the Saints got out of the inning.
The hosts cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Nokomis upped the margin to 5-2 with a solo run in the second off an RBI single by Kristen Stauder.
After a scoreless second for the Saints, Nokomis exploded for eight runs in the top of the third as the first five batters reached base safely.
After a leadoff double by Cesaretti, Emma Sneddon would single to score her teammate. Another single by Mia Fesser and a double by Addison Dangbar would up the lead to 8-2 in Nokomis’ favor.
Reaghan Jonas walked to continue the streak and Dangbar scored to make it 9-2 before Calvary got their first out. Two more walks would load the bases, but the Saints got out number two on a strikeout.
Having batted around in the inning, Baylee Cesaretti picked up her second hit of the inning with a two-run single, followed by a bases clearing triple by Emma Sneddon that made the score 13-2 after three innings.
Calvary scored twice in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to nine, but Nokomis’ performance in the third was just the appetizer for the main course, an 11-run inning that put the game out of reach even further.
Nokomis had four hits in the inning, which was highlighted by doubles from Dangbar and Wanger and singles from Jonas and Aubrey Jaros. The Redskins also benefitted from some control issues by the Calvary pitching staff, who walked seven and hit four batters in the inning.
The Saints would finally get out of the inning and would score three times in the bottom of the frame, but were still down 17 when the third out was recorded as the game ended in the fourth due to the 15-run mercy rule.
Addison Dangbar, Aubrey Jaros, Karli Wanger, Kristen Stauder, Baylee Cesaretti and Emma Sneddon would all have two hits apiece in the win as Nokomis outhit the Saints 15-10. Sneddon would lead the team with four RBIs, while Wanger added in three runs driven in.
Aubrey Jaros would strike out three and earn the victory on the mound for Nokomis while three Calvary pitchers combined for 15 walks and four hit batters.
The win upped Nokomis’ record to 4-2 at the time. They will play at Lincolnwood on Thursday, May 13, followed by a home game against Greenville on Friday, May 14 and a round robin at Tri-City on Saturday, May 15.
