Lady Redskins Bounce Back Against Bombers

Posted

After a pair of single digit losses at the Carlinville Holiday Tournament snapped a 10-game win streak for Nokomis, the Lady Redskins hit the road on Monday, Jan. 3, in search of a new streak in a new year.

Taking on the Brownstown/St. Elmo (BSE) co-op team, Nokomis put together a strong second quarter to win 47-39 and pick up their 14th win of the season.

The Bombers kept it close early on, with five players scoring one basket each. Audrey Sabol would handle the scoring load early for Nokomis, scoring half of her team’s points in the first quarter as Nokomis led 12-10 after eight minutes.

In the second quarter, the Redskins stepped it up on both ends of the court. They would hold BSE to half their first half total, with just two field goals and a free throw in the frame.

On offense, the Redskins did damage inside and out, with Hailey Engelman and Emma Sneddon slashing to the lane and combining for 11 points and Addison Dangbar dropping in a three and a two for five points in the quarter. Sabol also scored four points in the quarter, upping her total to 10 for the game as Nokomis led 32-15 at halftime.

The Bombers would outscore Nokomis in the last two quarters, but not by enough to overcome the 17-point halftime deficit. In the third, BSE gained two points, despite a three from Natalie Engelman and two points each from Sneddon and Sabol.

After going 0-for in the first three quarters from three, the Bombers had some success from behind the arc in the fourth, with Lexi Seabaugh hitting a pair of threes for six of her 11 points in the final frame.

Seabaugh’s shooting helped the Bombers outscore Nokomis 15-8 in the fourth, but the Redskins would hit just enough free throws (6-of-13) to escape with the eight-point win.

Sabol had two of those free throws and 16 points in the contest to lead Nokomis in scoring. She also had three steals and 11 rebounds, giving the Nokomis junior her seventh double-double of the season. For the year, Sabol is averaging 16.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

It was hardly a one-woman show, though, for the Redskins as three other Nokomis players netted at least a half dozen points in the win. Emma Sneddon finished with 10 points, going 6-for-8 from the free-throw line and adding five rebounds as well.

Hailey Engelman led the team with four steals and shot 60 percent from inside the three-point arc to finish with nine points, while Addison Dangbar added in seven points, hitting one of Nokomis’ two threes.

The other three came from Natalie Engelman, who also had a team-best four assists, while Carley King wrapped up the scoring with two points, hitting the only shot she would take in the game.

Lexi Seabaugh and Laney Baldridge finished with 19 and 11 for the Bombers, but the rest of the BSE roster managed just nine points against the Nokomis defense.

Now 14-5 on the season, the Redskins will be off until Saturday, Jan. 8, when they take on Okaw Valley in Nokomis, with a 5 p.m. tip-off for the junior varsity game.
