After picking up the program’s first South Central Conference championship in 2019, the Litchfield girls golf team seems poised to repeat the feat later this month.
The Lady Panthers’ latest assertion of their dominance over their SCC rivals came on Tuesday, Sept. 8, with Litchfield hosting Roxana, Vandalia and Greenville.
Litchfield shot a 185 to beat their closest competition, Roxana, by 28 strokes. Vandalia (265) and Greenville (267) finished third and fourth. The win improved Litchfield’s record to 8-0, with all eight wins coming against South Central Conference competition, with the closest match a 19 stroke difference (both Staunton and Carlinville).
The leader of the reenergized Lady Panthers is Laura Boston, who was medalist for the third time in as many matches. The Litchfield sophomore birdied three of her last five holes to finish the day with a 1-over 38, one over her season best set last week.
While Boston has been consistently phenomenal this year, the other Lady Panthers continue to show improvement. Carly Guinn shot a 5-over-par 42 on the day for a season-best round, while Lauren Monke contributed a 51, marking her first varsity scoring round of the year. Hailey Rentz would also finish in the top four for Litchfield with a 54.
The Panthers also got rounds from Alyssa Loyd, Olivia Fleming and Charlotte Gardner, all of whom were within seven strokes of Rentz. Loyd and Fleming shot 55 and 56 respectively, while Gardner finished with a 61, a stroke better than last Wednesday’s round.
Once all was said and done, Litchfield would have six of the top ten individual rounds in the match.
Litchfield still has to play Pana (coming up on Sept. 23), but owns wins over the six
other South Central Conference teams who will meet at the conference tournament at Indian Springs on Sept. 28.
Until then, the Lady Panthers will get some experience against some non-conference competition on Saturday, Sept. 12, as they play in the South County Lady Viper Invitational at Terry Park Golf Course in Palmyra.
