Lady Lancers Top Future Teammates

Tuesday was another civil war for the athletes of Lincolnwood and Morrisonville High School as the softball teams from the neighboring districts squared off in Raymond on April 27.

The meeting was one of two scheduled for this week, and with rain predicted for Thursday’s contest, possibly the last meeting ever before the two clubs become one with next year’s all-sports co-op.

The camaraderie between the athletes was on full display before the game as they gathered for a combined team picture, but once the photo op was over, it was down to business for both teams.

Playing in their first game since May 9, 2019, Lincolnwood jumped out to a five-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, eventually finishing off their future teammates by a 10-0 final score.

The offense came in surges for the Lancers, with two five-run innings in the first and fourth, with two scoreless frames of just seven combined at-bats sandwiched in between.

The rally in the first began with a one-out error, which allowed Avery Pope to reach first base, the first of five straight Lancers to do so. Pope would take second on Cassie Krager’s single, then moved to third when Morrisonville starter Whitney Lipe walked Brittany Slightom to load the bases.

Pope would come home after a second straight base on balls, this time to Taryn Millburg, and the Lancers led 1-0. A single by Paige Rainwater would plate two more runs and a wild pitch would make it 4-0 after Slightom scored.

Marisa Webb would drive in the fifth run of the inning on a ground ball to third that allowed Rainwater, who stole second and took third on the aforementioned wild pitch, to cross the plate. Lipe would strike out the next batter to end the threat, but the score stood at 5-0.

After two innings and just one hit, Lincolnwood rattled the bats again as they scored five more runs in the bottom of the fourth and put themselves in position to end the game early by the 10-run rule.

Katelyn Payne walked to start the inning and was pinch ran for by Amanda Seelbach. After a strikeout, Sidney Glick singled up the middle, moving Seelbach to second. Back-to-back base hits by Pope and Krager would drive in three runs and make it an 8-0 ball game.

After a pop up to center for out number two, Taryn Millburg reached on an error, then stole second to give Lincolnwood two more runners in scoring position, with Krager secure on third base.

With two RBIs to her credit already, Paige Rainwater would double her total with a single up the middle that scored both Krager and Millburg. The Lancers would threaten more as Lipe walked the next two batters to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the run as Lincolnwood led 10-0 going into what would be the final half inning.

Rainwater wasn’t only doing it with the bat on Tuesday, but also on the mound as well. After having her freshman debut erased due to the pandemic, the sophomore hurler made up for lost time and held the Mohawks to just one hit, a bunt single Ashley Walton barely beat out to start the fourth inning. Rainwater also struck out nine batters, including the final three of the game as she set down the five, six and seven hitters down in order to secure the victory.

All told, Lincolnwood would outhit the Mohawks 7-1, with Rainwater and Krager posting two hits apiece. Seven different players would also score runs for the Lancers, with all nine players in the starting line-up reaching first at least once.

Weather permitting, Lincolnwood will return the favor and visit Morrisonville on April 29, followed by a home game scheduled for Friday, April 30, against Hillsboro.
