Lady Lancers To Play For 7th At Carlinville

Posted

To say that Lincolnwood’s group at the Carlinville Holiday Tournament was going to be a challenge may have been an understatement for the Lady Lancers.

Of the three other teams in the Red Pool, Lincolnwood already had lost to South County and Williamsville earlier in the month, by 22 and 27 respectively. The third team in the pool was Calhoun, who were fresh off of handing top-seeded South County their first loss of the year, 12 games into the 2021 season.

Just how tough the tournament was showed in the Lancers’ first two games as they fell to South County 55-9 and Williamsville 46-17 on Dec. 27 and 28.

In Monday’s opening game against the Vipers, South County held the Lancers scoreless for the first six minutes and 50 seconds, before Avery Pope popped a mid-range jumper for two points. By that point, South County had already scored 12 points of their own and would add two more before the end of the quarter.

The Vipers increased the lead to 20-2 before Taryn Millburg curled around the right side for Lincolnwood’s second basket, but South County outscored the Lancers 16-2 the rest of the quarter, with Pope getting her second field goal of the game.

Down 36-6 at halftime, things didn’t get much better for Lincolnwood in the second half. Pope added a free throw in the third quarter, but that was Lincolnwood’s only point to make it a 45-7 ball game. With the clock running continuously, South County scored 10 straight points before Lilly Terneus broke the streak with a leaner in the lane to account for the final margin.

Avery Pope finished with five points to lead Lincolnwood, while Taryn Millburg and Lilly Terneus both had two.

Williamsville

On Tuesday, Lincolnwood’s offense scored as many points in the first half as they did in the South County game, but Williamsville proved to be a tough match-up as the Bullets won 46-17.

The visitors from Sangamon County outscored Lincolnwood 14-4 in the first and 17-5 in the second as they led 31-9 at halftime.

They’d up their lead to 44-13 by the end of the third quarter, which started the running clock for the final quarter. The Lancers would outscore their opponents 4-2 in the fourth, cutting two points off the lead to make it 46-17 when the final horn sounded.

Avery Pope finished with seven points to lead Lincolnwood, while Amanda Seelbach added four. Lilly Terneus (2), Cora Stevens (2), Mary Anderson (1) and Haelee Damm (1) also scored for the orange and black.

Calhoun

In their final pool play game, Lincolnwood faced off against Calhoun, who were 1-1 at Carlinville with a win over Williamsville 38-28 and a loss to South County 46-39.

Unfortunately for Lincolnwood, an upset wouldn’t be in the cards on Wednesday as they fell to the Warriors 49-23.

The Lancers trailed 18-3 after one and 29-9 at halftime. Calhoun would double up Lincolnwood 10-5 in the third quarter, but the Lancers had a solid fourth frame, scoring nine points to the Warriors’ 10 to account for the 26-point final deficit.

Upping their point totals each game, the pool play finale was Lincolnwood’s best game of the three at Carlinville so far. Avery Pope finished with 11 points, scoring in all four quarters, while Taryn Millburg added five.

Morgan Hampton chipped in three points, while Amanda Seelbach and Taylor Lush added two apiece to finish out the scoring.

The win over Lincolnwood, coupled with Williamsville beating South County 46-43 on Wednesday meant that there was a three-way tie atop the Red Pool standings. The final placement for Thursday’s medal round was determined by free throw percentage, with Williamsville taking first to move to the championship game against Greenfield-Northwestern, South County placing second to move to the third place game against Nokomis and Calhoun placing third to move to the fifth place game against Carlinville.

The Lancers will play in the seventh place game at the Carlinville Holiday Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 30, against Gillespie, who finished fourth in the Green Pool with an 0-3 record. The game starts at noon at the Carlinville Middle School Gym.
