Lady Lancers Split With Conference Rival

Posted

A pair of rivals each took home a victory as the Lincolnwood and Pawnee softball teams squared off in a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 26.

In game one, the Lancers scored five times in the top of the first, then held on for an 8-7 win over the Indians, Lincolnwood’s 13th victory of the year.

The Lancers made the most of some early chances against Pawnee starter Kayleigh Cobb as the first five batters reached base, starting with a walk to Sidney Glick. After a single by Avery Pope and a failed fielder’s choice off the bat of Cassie Krager, Brittany Slightom singled down the left side, allowing both Glick and Pope to score and make it 2-0.

Lincolnwood loaded the bases when Taryn Millburg reached on another missed fielder’s choice, and after a strikeout, Marisa Webb singled to plate Krager and Slightom and bump the score to 4-0. Pawnee would get the next two outs on a strikeout and a ground out, but not before Millburg scampered home on an error by the catcher to up the lead to 5-0.

The Indians would get two runs back in the bottom of the first, one of which came on a solo home run by Maya Rodriguez, and cut the lead to 5-3 with a solo tally in the third, but the Lancers tacked on three more runs for insurance in the top of the fifth.

Paige Rainwater doubled to start the fifth and her courtesy runner, Justine Seelbach, would score two batters later when Paige’s older sister, Sophie Rainwater, singled to left field. To keep with the theme, Justine’s sister Amanda Seelbach ran for Sophie Rainwater, but was erased on a fielder’s choice by Desi Pitchford.

The rally wasn’t done though as Sidney Glick doubled to score Pitchford and Avery Pope singled to score Glick and make it an 8-3 ball game in Lincolnwood’s favor.

As it turns out, every one of those runs were needed as Pawnee scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and threatened the lead even further in the bottom of the seventh.

The first two outs of the seventh would come in order, but the Indians got a single and two walks to load the bases against Lincolnwood starter Taryn Millburg. Coach Greg Neisler would make a pitching change, bringing in Marisa Webb, but a third walk of the inning pushed across a run for the Indians. With the go ahead run on second base, Webb bore down and got Abbey Specht to fly out to center field and end the game.

Millburg would strike out five and allowed seven runs, four earned, before Webb’s eight-pitch save. Millburg also walked five and allowed nine hits in her win.

Lincolnwood outhit the Indians 11-9 in the game, with Brittany Slightom, Avery Pope and Sophie Rainwater each collecting two hits.

Game Two

The second half of the doubleheader would go in Pawnee’s favor as the Indians scored eight runs in the seventh to win 14-2.

The Indians scored first with two runs in the top of the second thanks to an RBI base hit by Maddy Byers, but the Lancers rallied in the bottom of the third to tie the game after an RBI single by Brittany Slightom and a steal of home by Cassie Krager.

The Indians weren’t done though, as they scored solo runs in the fourth and fifth, plus two in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the top of the seventh, when Pawnee put together eight runs on seven hits and two walks.

Brittany Slightom and Paige Rainwater each had two hits for Lincolnwood, who was outhit 12-8 in game two. Rainwater would take the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and five walks in six innings. Marisa Webb pitched in the final inning, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits with a strikeout and a walk.

The Lady Lancers will host the opening game of their postseason on Thursday, June 3, against the winner of Wednesday’s game between Brussels and Pleasant Hill. The winner takes on the winner of Thursday’s game between North Greene and Carrollton.

Before that, they will play Tri-City to wrap up their conference schedule on Tuesday, June 1, in Raymond.
