Lady Hiltoppers Fifth At Riverton

Posted

The good news for Auburn in the fifth place game at the Riverton Christmas Classic was that they held Hillsboro to 20 fewer points than the Toppers scored in their 62-49 win over the Trojans on Dec. 20. The bad news was that Hillsboro held them to 19 fewer points and picked up their fourth win at the holiday tournament in Sangamon County.

The Hillsboro defense held Auburn to single digits in three of the four quarters as they improved to 12-5 overall with a 42-30 win in the fifth place game. Layne Rupert scored 19 points in the win and earned all-tournament honors with 101 points spread out over five games.

Rupert had five of those points in the first quarter, with Alex Frailey adding in four to give Hillsboro a 10-6 lead when coupled with a free throw by Meagan White. Frailey also had a solid game for the Hiltopers, scoring in all four quarters and finishing with 14 points in the win.

Addison Lowe joined in on the scoring in the second quarter, netting four points as Hillsboro’s lead went from four points to 11 by halftime. Rupert led all scorers with nine points, while Frailey added six for Hillsboro. Marley Smith had five in the quarter and eight in the first half, but only two other Trojans scored in the opening 16 minutes.

The second half would be much closer, with Auburn scoring 12 points in the third quarter to more than double their score. Hillsboro answered with 12 of their own to keep the Trojans from gaining ground, then finished off the win with an 8-7 fourth quarter.

In addition to her 19 points, Rupert also had five rebounds and three assists. Frailey had a team-best eight rebounds to go along with her 14 points.

Sierra Compton and Addison Lowe both had four points and five rebounds, with Compton also leading the team in steals with three. Megan White finished with one point, but also had five rebounds in the win.

Hillsboro was held without a three-pointer for the first time this season, going 0-for-14, but made 18 of their 42 attempts from inside the arc to put down the Trojans.

The Toppers will be back at home on Tuesday, Jan. 4, for their first game in Hillsboro since Dec. 6. Their opponent will be Gillespie, who is 6-7 after beating Lincolnwood in the seventh place game at the Carlinville Holiday Tournament.
