Juanita Elizabeth Markos, 92, of Litchfield, formerly of Hillsboro, died on Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, at Heritage Health: Therapy and Senior Care in Litchfield.

Funeral services will be planned at a later date. Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield is assisting the family.

Mrs. Markos was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Litchfield, to Buell John “B.J.” Ellis and the former Edna Elizabeth Lydick. She married Harold Gene Markos on Jan. 15, 1950, at St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Litchfield, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2019.

She graduated from Litchfield High School with the class of 1948. She went on to graduate from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville with master’s degrees in both education and fine arts.

Mrs. Markos was employed by the Panhandle School District as an elementary school teacher. She was a well-known area artist and quilter of wall hangings. She authored a book, founded the local Rembrandt Society and traveled extensively with her husband.

She was a member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church and was involved with the Methodist Women.

Mrs. Markos is survived by her son, Larry (Elizabeth) Markos of St. Louis, MO; two grandchildren, Sarah (Corey) Ozark and Hannah (Jason) Wandersee; six great-grandchildren, Jane, Eliza and Lincoln Ozark, Caspen and Christian McFoos, and Canon Wandersee; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Ellis and Charles Ellis; and sister, Mary Williams.
