Joseph L. Cerny, 91, of Witt, died Thursday, April 1, 2021, at 9:44 a.m. at Hillsboro Area Hospital.

Cremation rites were accorded. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 21, at 11 a.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro with Deacon Lee Johns of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro. Military rites will be accorded by the U.S. Department of Defense and American Legion Post 425.

Mr. Cerny was born Oct. 20, 1929, in Chicago, the son of Joseph A. and Blanche (Michek) Cerny. He married Chi Kyun Woo on Sept. 2, 1968, in Seoul, South Korea.

A 1947 graduate of Farragut High School in Chicago, he served in the U.S. Army from August 1948 to September 1968. During his career with the U.S. Army, he took tours of duty to Japan, Korea, Germany, Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.

He was a correctional officer for Graham Correctional Facility in Hillsboro. He was a member of the American Legion Post 425 in Irving, as well as the Montgomery County Veterans Assistance Commission. He was also instrumental in helping form the Montgomery County not-for-profit Veterans Task Force, which provides free transportation to veterans for appointments at various veterans’ hospitals. During his lifetime, he lived in Chicago and Witt, as well as many other placed during his service in the Army.

Mr. Cerny is survived by his children, Tina Penrod of Karnak, Joseph “Chip” (wife Debbie) Cerny of Maui, HI, and Joanne (husband Brad) Hill of Glenview; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and brother, Lee (wife Mary Jo) Cerny.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter, Joliene Colten.
