With two members in quarantine and unable to compete, a team win was off the table for the Hillsboro girls golf team on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton.
Instead, the two remaining Toppers, Meagan Jorn and Aurelie Granito, focused on doing the best they could, which they more than accomplished.
Jorn would shoot a 44 on the day to take medalist honors, beating Staunton’s Caidy Tuetken by two and Carlinville’s Malee Whitler by three. The HHS senior finished the round with four pars and three bogies as she continues her stellar final year in orange and black.
Granito followed Jorn with her best round of the year as she shot a 64 with a pair of double bogeys.
“Meagan is striking the ball very well. She continues to get up and down with her chipping and putting and was able to save pars and bogeys. Aurélie played very well tonight and shot her best round so far this season. She is starting to show improvements in her game,” Coach Son Clayton said. “Both girls played outstanding golf today.”
As for the team results, Staunton edged Carlinville by two strokes, 216 to 218.
The Toppers will be short handed on Friday as well, when they take on Lincolnwood at the Hillsboro Country Club. The match will also be senior night for the Toppers, with Jorn to be honored at 4 p.m. before the match.
