After starting the season 4-4 and surviving a stretch plagued with injured and quarantined players, the Nokomis boys basketball program has been on a hot streak.
The Redskins have won six of their last seven games, including the last three contests by a total of 105 points. The latest of those conquests came Tuesday, when Nokomis defeated Calvary 66-37 behind 31 combined points from senior Seth Johnson and junior Jake Johnson.
Johnson and Johnson were the only Nokomis players to score in all four quarters of the rout, with Seth netting 12 of his game-high 16 in the first quarter, while Jake spread his 15 out fairly equally, with six in the fourth quarter his best frame of the night.
While the similarly surnamed came up with big nights for Coach Dan DeWerff, the balance of the Redskins lineup was evident as eight different players scored.
Elijah Aumann joined Johnson and Johnson in double figures with 13, five of which came in the first quarter when Nokomis asserted itself with a 19-8 lead at the end of eight minutes.
Ryan Eisenbarth added eight points, all coming in the first half, with six in Nokomis’ 15-9 second quarter that gave them a 34-17 halftime lead.
Senior Kendall Knodle would chip in seven, including four in the third quarter, the only frame in which Nokomis was outscored by the Saints, 14-12.
Any hope of a comeback was short-lived though, as Nokomis held the Saints to just six points in the fourth quarter to salt away the 29-point win.
In addition to the aforementioned, Nokomis also got three from Ben Clavin and two each from Nolan Himes and Cooper Bertolino.
The win not only kept Nokomis’ hot streak going as they entered Wednesday’s tilt with the always pesky Panthers of Pana, but it also ran their MSM Conference record to 6-0.
They will have a chance to improve on that mark on Friday, March 12, and possibly earn a conference championship, when they host the South County Vipers at 6 p.m.
