John Steven “Steve” Kimbro, 69, of Nokomis, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, at his home in Nokomis.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 23, in the Nokomis High School Gymnasium in Nokomis. The funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. with Pastor Myron Kirk and Dan Easterday officiating. The committal service and burial will be held at 3 p.m. at Prairie Cemetery in rural Ramsey.
Mr. Kimbro was born June 27, 1955, in Hillsboro, the son of John Robert and Marian Louise (Worker) Kimbro. He married Susan G. Wollerman on Sept. 1, 1979, in Ramsey. He was a retired teacher and basketball coach at Nokomis High School. As the boys basketball coach, Mr. Kimbro amassed 838 wins, which makes him fifth on the all-time Illinois high school basketball coach win list. He was inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame. Mr. Kimbro had four teams appear at the state tournament in 1983, 1997, a 2008 second-place finish and a 2013 third-place finish.
He taught woodworking and building trades. He enjoyed carpentry, refurbishing tools and fishing.
Mr. Kimbro is survived by his wife, Susan Kimbro; daughter, Casey Kimbro; sons, Wade Kimbro and Lucas (Caroline) Kimbro; grandchildren, Kaylee and Claire Kimbro, all of Nokomis; mother, Marian Kimbro of Fillmore; brothers, Jim Kimbro of Dawson, Bryan (Lori) Kimbro of Fillmore and Jeff (Shellie) Kimbro of Catlin.
He was preceded in death by his father John Robert Kimbro.
