John C. Terneus, 88, of Hillsboro, died Sunday, April 4, 2021, at 11:29 p.m. at his residence.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church in Hillsboro with Father Daniel Willenborg of St. Agnes Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be held in St. Agnes Cemetery in Hillsboro. COVID-19 CDC guidelines will be followed with the use of masks and social distancing.

Mr. Terneus was born May 28, 1932, in Decatur, to the late Vernon L. and Marguerite L. (Gallagher) Terneus, Sr. He married Mary Altevogt on Feb. 12, 1952, in Decatur, and she survives.

He lived in the Hillsboro area most of his life and attended Hillsboro High School. For 15 years, he was employed at Eagle Picher in Hillsboro. He later worked at the Coal Mine in Coffeen until it closed, then went to the Farmersville Mine before retiring. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by John (wife Wendy) Terneus of Farmersville, Mike (wife Sharon) Terneus of Butler Township, Tim Terneus of Decatur, Julie (husband Larry) Watson of Jacksonville, Steve (wife Lisa) Terneus of Wildwood, MO, and Beth (husband Fritz) Netemeyer of Hillsboro; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Vernon “Bud” L. Terneus, Jr. of Hillsboro, Thomas G. Terneus of Chesterfield, MO, and Mickie (husband Mike) Gaither of Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Larry J. Terneus and a sister, Dorothy Gunn.
