It's been five years since the Hillsboro boys basketball team last won the championship of the Carlinville Holiday Tournament. For Litchfield, it's been a little bit longer, with the Purple Panthers' last title coming in 2012. But on Thursday, Dec. 30, one of those streaks will come to an end, while the other grows by one year.
Rivals due to conference, distance and choice, Hillsboro and Litchfield will square off at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, after both went 3-0 at this week's 55th annual tournament.
The Toppers punched their ticket first, beating East Alton-Wood River 63-56 to hand the Oilers their first loss in pool play. Will Christian had 17 points for Hillsboro, who was missing leading scorer Drake Vogel in the game. Gavin Matoush added 14 for the Toppers, who moved to 7-6 on the season.
Litchfield followed suit in the next game, beating Carlinville 56-49 to finish pool play undefeated. Victor McGill exploded for 27 points, while Keenan Powell added 12 for the Panthers, who improve to 8-5 on the year.
If Litchfield wins it will be their third title at Carlinville, while Hillsboro has won five times going into Thursday's match-up.
