Homers Help Sink Lady Hiltoppers At Staunton


The Hillsboro softball team would face some homer happy competition on May 13 and 14 as Staunton and Rochester combined for four bombs in their wins over the Toppers.

Playing in Staunton, the Bulldogs had three of the four big flies, with Taylor Nolan posting two and Sarah Korunka adding a third.

Staunton scored seven times in the first, once in the second, six times in the third and once in the fourth to beat the Toppers by the mercy rule in the fourth inning 15-0.

Staunton starter Tori Kierbach would hold Hillsboro to two hits, a pair of singles by Haley Major and Aubrey Evans, while striking out four and walking none. Meagan Jorn gave up 15 runs, 11 earned on 14 hits and one walk with one strikeout for the Toppers.

The loss to the Rockets would be much closer as Rochester scored six runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-4 victory on May 14 in Hillsboro.

The Toppers outhit the Rockets 8-6 in the game, but a home run by Raegan Rezba and doubles from Maci Calvert and Josie Deatherage helped push Rochester out in front.

Kenadie Carlock and Summer Smith would have two hits apiece, while Erin Moore had Hillsboro’s only extra-base hit with a double. Haley Major, Aubrey Evans and Taelyn Smith also had singles in the loss.

Both Taelyn Smith and Meagan Jorn would pitch for Hillsboro, with Smith taking the loss. Smith allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks, with three strikeouts. Jorn gave up six runs, four earned, on three hits and two walks with one strikeout.
