Hillsboro Girls Roll Roxana

No matter how you slice up the Hillsboro girls game against Roxana on Thursday, Feb. 18, the Lady Hiltoppers were dominant in their 52-15 win over the Shells.

Offensively, the Toppers scored ten or more points in every quarter, except in the first, when they scored nine.

Defensively, they were even better, holding Roxana to six or fewer points in all four quarters, with a goose egg for the Shells in the fourth.

The only chink in the armor of the Hiltoppers came from the free-throw line, where they went 6-of-14 for the game. They countered that by playing as close to foul-free defense as they could, with just seven personal fouls, none of which sent Roxana to the line.

Despite Hillsboro’s eventual dominance, only glimmers of that success shown through early on as they led by just four, 9-5, after one quarter.

The Toppers turned it up a notch in the second quarter though, holding Roxana to four points from Olivia Mouser and torching the Shells for 20 on the offensive end. Five of those would come from Layne Rupert at guard, while six more came underneath the basket from Alex Frailey.

Only three people would score for either team in the third quarter as Hillsboro outscored Roxana 12-6. Lexi Ryan had all six points for the Shells, while Nikya Harston (eight) and Rupert (four) handled the points for Hillsboro.

Up 41-15 with a running clock, Hillsboro outscored Roxana 11-0 in the final frame, with Kelsey Holtgrave (four) and Meagan White (two) getting their first points of the season.

Hillsboro would be led by Nikya Harston, who outscored Roxana by two with 17 points. Layne Rupert added 11, while Alex Frailey and Claire Tester had eight apiece.
