Highway Cleanup Recovers Stolen Items

When Imagine Hillsboro volunteers started heading west from Hillsboro to clean up Route 16 on Saturday morning, June 12, they didn’t know they would also eventually recover stolen items from a crime.

Volunteers Doug Johnson, Cindy Huber, Mayor Don Downs, Maryn Tarver and Rylie Jones headed out to pick up trash on the state highway from the west side of Hillsboro to the Butler T.  Just west of the bridge, Johnson picked up personal items like a driver’s license, FOID and concealed carry cards, credit cards, gift cards, and an empty money clip.

Downs took the items to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office where he learned they had been stolen from a truck in Macoupin County on Wednesday, earlier in the week.

When he went back to the scene to look for more of the stolen items, the owner showed up after he had found his missing passport along Route 16 near WSMI.  Downs returned what the Imagine Hillsboro volunteers had recovered.

“He was really grateful,” Downs said.  “It makes you feel good when that happens.”
