Harold Dwight Young, Jr, 94, of Walnut Creek, CA, formerly of Hillsboro, died on Tuesday, Aug 10, 2021, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CA, from Covid-19.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, at the home of Mr. Young’s daughter, Karen (Robert) Schwab at 120 Arlene Drive, Walnut Creek, CA.Inurnment will take place in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA, and later at Waveland Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Mr. Young was born on Oct. 9, 1926, in Hillsboro Township, to Harold Dwight Young, Sr., and Ruth E. Green Young. He married Giovanni “Jenny” Pegoraro on Sep. 4, 1948, in Rockford, they later divorced. He married Ina M. Sears on Jan. 5, 1957, in San Francisco, CA, they were married 61 years at the time of her death in June 2018. 

Mr. Young was a student at Hillsboro High School when he was drafted in 1945. He began his military career by serving his country in WWII and later the Korean War where he achieved the rank of sergeant while stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA. Mr. Young was on a Navy ship in the Philippine Islands on Aug. 6, 1945, when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. His military assignment involved him being in the Allied Occupation of Japan under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. He turned 19 years old the day he stepped onto Japan. Mr. Young retired from Del Monte Corp., in 1983, and later drove a school bus for Durham bus service for over 15 years.

He loved cars and was a member of the San Francisco Sports Car Club for many years, attending rallies racing up and down the Pacific coastline in his Austin Healy. Mr. Young was a member of the Jolly Boys Mining Co-op from 1966-2000, where he mined for gold in Yuba County, CA, on the South Fork of the Yuba River. He was a Christian. His first church home was Waveland Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro, subsequently it was the last church he attended just nine days before his death. Mr. Young and his son, Ron, attended the church with his siblings and several other family members, seated in the same pews as his family had over the years. He regularly attended Danville Presbyterian Church and their Bible study group in Danville, CA.

Mr. Young is survived by his son from his first marriage, Ronald (Laura) Young of Pacheco, CA; children from his second marriage, Karen (Robert) Schwab of Walnut Creek, CA, Mark D. (Birgitte) Young of Pacheo, CA, and Richard P. Young of Walnut Creek, CA; grandchildren, Ericka Ruth (Jeremy) Silva of Hillsborough, CA, Sam (Emily) Schwab of Santa Barbara, CA, Garret I. Schwab (fiancé, Sonia Luque) of Richmond, CA, Anders L. (Christina) Young of St. Petersburg, FL, Summer (fiancé, John Miner) Young and Karina Young of Pacheco, CA; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Daniella, Olivia Silva and Kooper I. Schwab; former daughter-in-law, Alexia “Aida” Kruttschnitt of Hillsborough, CA; sister-in-law, Joan Sears Sheirer of Bedford, PA; and brother-in-law Vernon C. Moseley of Boiling Springs, SC, and Mary Young, formerly of Litchfield now of Pleasant Plains; siblings, Betty A. Roper of Decatur, Alice R. DeRight Kern of Hillsboro, Robert A. Young of Citrus Springs, FL, Gerald E. (Linda) Young of Hillsboro, David N. (Peggy) Young of Coffeen, Judith A. (Richard) Volk of Spring Lake MI, and Beverly L. (John) Smith of Nokomis; a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant son, Gary Michael Young; and siblings, Russell O. Young, Sr., James Stuart Young, Rosaleen Young Moseley and Burnetta “Nippy” Young Mohl.
