Gerald Gilbert Graden, 83, of Nokomis, died on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, at 7:11 a.m. in Litchfield.

Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home in Nokomis. The funeral service will begin immediately after visitation at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ryan Follis officiating.   Masks will be required. Burial will be at the Nokomis Cemetery.

Mr. Graden was born June 24, 1938, in a rented farmhouse west of Nokomis, the first born son of Gilbert and Geneva Louise (Davis) Graden.

He graduated from Nokomis High School where he was known for his sharp mind, quick wit and sense of humor. He played guard on the football team and was named all-conference as a sophomore, weighing only 140 lbs. After graduation, at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Army and became a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. To this day, Chuck says of his big brother, “he was one tough customer.” Mr. Graden loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and loved to talk about the sport. His photographic memory awed all who talked baseball with him, as he easily quoted statistics and World Series teams, winners and scores as far back as the 1930’s.

Mr. Graden loved spending time with his family. He adored his nieces and nephews and step-niece and nephews, and enjoyed when they were around, often asking questions about their lives and really listening to the answers. He also loved to tease them. As they grew older, he would ask about each of them. His family is certain they are better because of him. He kept things simple and helped them to remember that family is more important than things and that caring for those who cannot care for themselves is a privilege, not a burden. He was beloved by them and they feel it is their honor to celebrate “Uncle Jerry.”

Mr. Graden is survived by his brother, Charles (wife Marinel) Graden; sisters-in-law Irene Graden of Hillsboro and Janet Graden of Nokomis; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, David Graden and Dennis Graden.

Memorials can be made to Aperion Care of Litchfield.
