Gary “Satch” Wayne Sheppard, Sr., 71, of Berlin, died on Monday, May 17, 2021, at 10:35 p.m. at his home.

Cremation rites were accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Lincoln Land Cremation Society in Springfield assisted the family.

Mr. Sheppard was born Aug. 29, 1949, in Springfield, to Joseph and Opal (Clayton) Sheppard.

He attended Berlin High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, from 1966 to 1969, during the Vietnam War.

During his career, Mr. Sheppard was employed as a truck driver at Bunker Trucking and served as a farmhand. His family also owned The White Cottage, a restaurant in Raymond.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #743 and the DAV Club. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and having a beer with the guys under the shade tree. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and NASCAR fan, especially Dale Earnhart.

Mr. Sheppard is survived by his children, Gary Wayne (Michelle) Sheppard, Jr. of Quincy, Dawn Bergschneider and Charles Joseph (Jessica) Sheppard, both of Berlin; mother of his children, Priscilla Sheppard of Petersburg; grandchildren, Katlyn, Mercedes (Chad) Smith, Austin (Kaitlyn), Tyler Jo (Tisha), Kaylie (Jeremy), Kendra (Brandon), Chealynn, Randy, Pressly and Gracie Mae; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Lou of Carlinville, George and Bob (Sherri), both of Berlin, Shirley (Bob) of Virden and Barb of New Berlin; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his beloved dog, Harley.
