Florence Ruth McCuistion, 97, of Alton, formerly of Mt. Olive, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, at 2:36 a.m. at her home.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 13, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Mt. Olive City Cemetery. A graveside service and burial will be held at 11 a.m. at the cemetery with the Rev. Nancy Hubert officiating. Becker and Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McCuistion was born Feb. 16, 1923, in Mt. Olive, the eldest daughter of John and Florence (Schwing) Lorenz. She married George Garstang in 1945, and he preceded her in death in 1957. She then married Dr. Hubert McCuistion in 1977, and he preceded her in death in 1984.

She attended Mt. Olive schools and graduated from Mt. Olive High School in 1941. A registered nurse, she graduated from Alton Memorial School of Nursing, and immediately went to work as an office nurse in Alton, a position she held until her retirement.

Mrs. McCuistion enjoyed birds, gardening and crafting, and was an exemplary needle worker, doing cross-stitch embroidery and quilting. For many years, she contributed numerous items to the annual nurses’ alumni bazaar to benefit the hospital. She was a member of the Main Street Methodist Church in Alton.

She is survived by her sister, Roneith Anderson of Mt. Olive; nephew, Forrest (Judy) Lorenz of Litchfield; three nieces, Carol Anderson and Joanne Anderson, both of Mt. Olive, and Janice Lorenz of Bunker Hill; a stepson, John Munger of Louisiana; ten stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Lorenz; sister-in-law, Katherine Lorenz; a brother-in-law, Clarance Anderson; stepson, Hubert McCuistion, Jr; and a stepdaughter, Nell “Bitsy” (Roger) McCuistion Annin.
